The recent passing of Tony Bennett had me thinking about about other crooners from that era. Johnny Mathis, who will be 88-years-old in September, is still touring. I found a recent performance of Johnny performing his hit, "Misty". Johnny can still sing well and hit all the notes. Hang in there until the 2:15 mark, it's great! We're so lucky to still have Johnny Mathis with us, and it won't be long until his magnificent Christmas music is played again.

A couple of decent musicians here... You might say that!! Nice to see Carl getting his due. Of course, The Beatles were huge fans from the get-go and would record half a dozen Perkins tunes over the years ( here). "Matchbox" is one of my all-time favourite songs and these lads give it a birthday. Thanks for sharing, Sheriff.

Nothing here is quite random: I discovered them all because I was scanning the article " 30 insanely obscure underground rock albums that only connoisseurs know about." (What an overlong, overly pretentious title ... which is actually fitting for an article about underground music, often of the prog variety.) A lot of it is from the late 60s and early 70s, so I'm wondering whether any of our members actually knew of any of these bands? Thrice Mice, My Solid Ground, Troyka, Grail ... anything ringing any bells? I kind-of like Aubrey Small.

Not interested to be quite honest, Cap'n -- I heard enough prog rock during those years to last several lifetimes...

Prog was just one example, it's actually genre-spanning. Psych, pop, krautrock, etc., are in there too. A disproportionate amount of which seem German. I don't know whether Germany had a lot of great stuff at the time, or somebody in hindsight had a lot of time to spend uncovering unknown German music and decided to call it great. (A lot is not German. UK, American, even a Yugoslavian one.)

I don't know whether Germany had a lot of great stuff at the time, or somebody in hindsight had a lot of time to spend uncovering unknown German music and decided to call it great. (A lot is not German. UK, American, even a Yugoslavian one.) I should have read the article first before shouting my mouth off (an old story). The one name I remember from the time is Tucky Buzzard, but not their music. And then there's the C.A. Quintet (and I quote from down the road apiece): Looking through the "Worth Another Listen" tier of that famous three-part list of obscure stuff first posted at PSF, this entry has always made me smile: "The C.A. Quintet--Trip Thru Hell (some good moments but mostly shit)". I then took it upon myself to check this album out. The session started off promisingly. "Trip Thru Hell Pt 1" is pretty goofy but eminently listenable -- the phased/flanged drum solo is even exciting in its way. The quality takes a slight dip seven tracks in at "Trip Thru Hell Pt 2" but picks up again... until we reach the covers. Covers of famous songs are a tricky business at the best of times and they fall pretty flat here! But they're the unfortunate exception on what is on the whole an engaging if fairly lightweight psych album. So I'll turn that remark around if I may and say "some shit but mostly good moments". A most unusual feature is the use of a trumpet as part of the standard lineup in a psych band. Curiously, this brief B-side appears to be the only track by C.A. Quintet that I'm able to embed. (The album in question can be found on YouTube.)

These are just great. You can clearly see everybody's having such a good time at this concert. Though all guitarists that took the stage that night admired and were influenced by Carl, George Harrison had to be his biggest fan up there. He's smiling all the way through, he knows every song by heart and his playing in the early portion of the Beatles career at times is Carl Perkins and Scotty Moore... one just gotta listen to songs like I'll Cry Instead or Can't Buy Me Love to understand exactly what I'm saying. He was so obsessed with Perkins that when the Beatles went out on their first professional tour, supporting a singer by the name of Johnny Gentle, in Scotland 1960, George decided to call himself 'Carl Harrison' - though he'd let go of the artistic name as soon as they got to Hamburg. We know that fact now because a set of autographs from that Scotland trip survived. You can see George's on the top left: The Beatles: Johnny Lennon, Paul Ramon, Carl Harrison, Stuart de Stael and Thomas Moore

This could go in the jazz thread, of course, but it really was a random YouTube discovery: the almighty algorithm suggested this to me, and damn if it didn't hit the spot.
Whether you're a jazz fan or not, you probably know Dave Brubeck's "Take Five" (written by Paul Desmond). But regardless, this performance is both impressive and heartwarming.
