Kapitan I agree and I thought of that right after I wrote my post and watched the video again. It looks like therefore now may not be on the actual track but wanted to play the guitar while he was singing for the reasons you state. It does mean however that Dave is credited and was one of the main recorders on the actual track so it's a pleasure to hear his beautiful acoustic playing. And I guess Dave is just sort of miming his part in the actual recording in they video of him playing like everybody else's miming . Great and insightful post so thank you The credits do not credit Al for playing guitar when hes obviously playing guitar He's playing guitar in the video. But we shouldn't assume anything in the video has any relation to the audio recording sessions. After all, we don't assume Mike sang his part from a lakefront, hillside patio (or wherever he is), that Bruce sang on the ocean coast, or that others were outdoors when they sang.
He probably just felt more comfortable holding and playing a guitar in the video because usually that's what he's doing when he sings live. (Also, just like live, he stops playing to point a finger. Trademarked move ... but also evidence that's not the real track, as you can't just stop playing to gesture without affecting the track!)
And it was a great move, because otherwise he might have pulled out some comical, overdramatic moves like Matt did: (it's cued up)

The Beach Boys are almost back together Yeah, when I watch the video I feel a little warm and fuzzy and positive and get excited and everything. You watch everybody sharing the music and entertaining and appearing...happy. Prof, other than you, there's probably nobody - other than me - who would love to see the guys get back together one more time for one more album. However, when all is said and done - and maybe things will indeed be said and done in the near future - it's going to come down to one thing. For any new album to happen, Mike will insist on writing with Brian. If that can be worked out, there's a chance. If it can't, well, I just don't see Mike budging. As far as touring of some type, I guess that's an easier path to negotiate.

I don't know about that, Sheriff John Stone: I'd like an album, too! I don't think it is very likely (though also I don't think it is impossible), and with each passing year I think it is less likely to be any good. And I even think that they shouldn't do it if they don't want to, as I think some contractual chore would be a shame (not to mention they deserve better than to be pushed into things at their age).
But all that said, I'd like it.

I am walking on Redondo Beach right now and watching the surfers take their board to the rough surf. And I'm listening to the album little deuce coupe. and I'm listening to all of you think about the BB, and at all seems so real and hopeful.

I meant to say - other than The Prof, there's nobody who wants a new BB album MORE THAN ME. But, Kapitan, you are duly noted. Whatever they decide on, I would think the discussions will take place soon. As much time as they had to record a 50th Anniversary reunion album in 2011-12, it was still rushed. I don't think the guys are especially busy right now. Let the discussions begin!

Back to the album, I wonder if there isn't more than the Rolling Stone article mentioned. Because that listed seven songs, making it an EP, more or less (albeit a generous one), but certainly not a full album.
I checked iTunes to see whether the album was available for preorder. (If it were, we would be able to see how many songs there are. Even when they don't name them all, they almost always have track numbers as placeholders.) However, it isn't up yet for preorder. The single is available for purchase, though.
If there are more than those ... what, pray tell, are they!? More California Music songs? More Beach Boy's solo songs? More Rob Bonfiglio originals?

Thanks, The Cincinnati Kid. Through that link, I see there's one more song that I hadn't accounted for (as I don't think it was in the Rolling Stone article): Jeff Foskett's cover of the Youngbloods' "Get Together." Not sure when the recording dates from, but it was released on Foskett's rarities album dated '18.
(And then also an a cappella and an instrumental vesion of ASMTYD.)

I was going to ask if anyone had listened to this since it was released yesterday, but I guess most of us have already heard all of the songs at one point or another. The last two aren't even available on Spotify (I guess you could say those specific versions haven't been heard before).

Kid
It's in the CD player in the car and I didn't get to the Final 2 songs yet which are the instrumental and the Acapella versions of add some music so I'll get back to you but it's really wonderful to get a beach boy essentially kind of a beach boy CD in the mail and put in the stereo and play it but I've also been playing the version on tidal and the whole thing sounds really great
Sorry to see that on a recent review posted on another thread which was very very positive that someone thought Jeff's song was out of place. Don't love that song but love Jeff's version of it and I was fine with it. It's darn good drivin through the southland freeways music I'm sure you will agree.

Got to be honest, I was kind of excited for this. I know that all the songs have been heard before, but it’s still fun to get a new release. However, I was severely disappointed, because of one reason. The sound. To put it bluntly, this entire CD sounds… bad. Compare this recording from 2007:
To the exact same recording on this new compilation:
It clips, it peaks, it distorts, the entire thing sounds like it was sourced from a low quality MP3 rip. And it’s not just this song, all of the other songs besides the title track and Friends are available in much higher quality elsewhere. And as for Friends, it’s supposed to be all of the children of The Beach Boys, but you wouldn’t be able to tell because the level of compression put on all of the vocals and instruments is so high that it just sounds like mush. Even more disappointing given the fact that Mark Linett had a hand in it. I am happy that it was made for charity, so please don’t take my criticisms the wrong way. However, for a project that began in spring 2020 and basically took an entire year to come out, it really does sound like something that was quickly thrown together using a free Youtube to MP3 converter

Just listened with headphones...that’s unfortunate. The 2007 version sounds 100% better. Seriously.

At first I thought maybe the pandemic had something to do with it, you know, maybe they couldn't get the studio/recordings/equipment situated. But, no, that's no excuse. First, these are pros you're dealing with, and there's obviously several ways to get it done right.

I’m reminded, though, how much I like the song “She Believes In Love Again”. It’s been a while since I‘ve listened to BB85.
