Oh my God, Al and Matt jumped ship!!!!! STAMOS!!!!
That should about cover the reaction of this cover that we'd been hearing about for a while now.

A few things to say on this.
1. It sounds pretty good.
2. It's for a good cause, so I am not about to crap on it (to be crude about it).
3. That said, it feels about as necessary as another "Do It Again" remake. I'd truly have loved had this same group of people either more radically reinvented an existing tune or done a new one.
4. I don't think it's accurate to say Matt Jardine jumped ship: this isn't the Beach Boys or BW band, it's just California Music (of which he was a part, right?) plus some Beach Boys and guests.
5. It is really unfortunate that Brian didn't participate in this. He must have been asked, and it wouldn't have required a whole lot out of him. He could have recorded remotely, appeared in the video remotely just like everyone else ... he didn't have to carry a heavy load, just sing a few lines or backgrounds here or there. Considering everyone else did it, that is really a shame.
6. Great seeing Jeff, considering we know he's got health problems.
7. What's with that list of credits at the end? After the band members, they thank basically everyone in each of their bands, families, next-door neighbors, and a few random strangers on the street, that list is so long!

I was being facetious about the Jardines jumping ship. But, I'll bet some BB fans are pulling their "Jump to Conclusions Mat" out of the closet after viewing that video.
I agree, it sounded good. At least they took a song that's a bit of a deeper cut than most BB songs. It's pretty well known among BB fans, but outside of the fanbase, it's probably a fairly deep cut. Or, at least a less shallow cut.

Or, at least a less shallow cut. That's very true. I would actually call it a deep cut among non-hardcore fans, not just a "less shallow cut." I don't think I've ever met someone who knew it, other than people who I know are REALLY into the band.

I know when I saw the band in C50, and they opened up the second set with Add Some Music, the crowd seemed pretty indifferent. I meant to add that Dennis and Carl's images on the projector was a nice touch. Although, it kind of highlighted the fact that Brian was absent.

It's for a good cause, so I am not about to crap on it (to be crude about it). I am!
Can anybody give me one good reason - just one GOOD one - why Brian Wilson could not spare a few minutes of his time to participate in this video? That's bullshit. I hope Azoff is watching. This is EXACTLY the kind of head-scratching stuff that happens with these guys, and has happened for 60 years.
Where was Ambha Love? Not only is she one of the daughters and a singer/performer, but she was part of that short-lived and will probably be assembled again someday California Saga (was that the name?).
This is not a Stamos bash because I'm not a Stamos basher, but I didn't think his appearance was necessary.
The Dennis and Carl film clips got to me, and Jeff Foskett's short snippet.
Too much Mike. And Matt Jardine (in two sets of clothes).
Glad to see they didn't forget David Marks.
No Billy Hinsche?
They didn't have to feature the violin and cello player; wasted space/time; they weren't family were they?
I could do without the Rubber Soul album a couple of times, but did I also notice some KISS figurines or KISS mugs in Rob Bonfiglio's room?
When you see how old the Beach Boys' kids are, it really hits home. They're almost all approaching or past 50. Time waits for no one.
Hey, Azoff/Iconic, I hope you're taking notes. You can do better than this. I'm for hire. Cheap, too.

She's credited as a singer. Speaking of, wow, what a long credit list for one song and video! I though it sounded pretty good. Mike sounds better here than on some of his recent solo recordings. The mix really is good. I just thought the vocal break exposed the vocals too much. Though, I only listened once, so... And, yeah, Brian should have participated. Even if he just wanted to sing a background part or something. In fact, that might have been fun. Especially if it were a new part.

Really nice video and once again reminds me how happy it makes me when the guys get together (well, minus Brian this time...). I guess this was the big thing ESQ teased earlier last year? And I assume this is also the result of when we heard the band was going to re-record this. As mentioned, Brian is noticeably absent. There are some possible explanations depending on when this was recorded. None of them are particularly positive.

The credits do not credit Al for playing guitar when hes obviously playing guitar
And you see the beautiful tribute at the end to all The Beach Boys parents. Something marvelous is happening here

The credits do not credit Al for playing guitar when hes obviously playing guitar He's playing guitar in the video. But we shouldn't assume anything in the video has any relation to the audio recording sessions. After all, we don't assume Mike sang his part from a lakefront, hillside patio (or wherever he is), that Bruce sang on the ocean coast, or that others were outdoors when they sang.
He probably just felt more comfortable holding and playing a guitar in the video because usually that's what he's doing when he sings live. (Also, just like live, he stops playing to point a finger. Trademarked move ... but also evidence that's not the real track, as you can't just stop playing to gesture without affecting the track!)
And it was a great move, because otherwise he might have pulled out some comical, overdramatic moves like Matt did: (it's cued up)

Thanks The Cincinnati Kid for pointing out there's a new album. That merits some chatter. The article says that, other than this song, it includes:
Song by song:
Add Some Music to Your Day: obviously we know most about that one, as we've heard it. Features all but Brian of the Beach Boys, plus the California Music "kids."
Friends: Presumably just the kids and grandkids.
Ram Raj: Previously released by Mike on Unleash the Love (2017). No other "name" contributors, at least on the original.
Jenny Clover: Previously released (digitally) earlier this year, been out for a few years. No other "name contributors," at least on the original.
Long Promised Road: I would have guessed this would be Brian Wilson's version that is supposedly coming as a tie-in to the upcoming documentary, but nope, it's a David Marks version. I assume it is this nearly instrumental version, released on the ESQ album Under God. I've never heard it, but it was released in 2006.
She Believes in Love Again: Presumably this is what Bruce brought to the TWGMTR sessions, right? Or what they did in those sessions? (I wasn't clear whether he had demo'd it previously, or whether they did it there but just didn't use it.) EDIT - this is out there, released in 2007, unclear when it was recorded. Possibly this is, or is the basis for, what's on the album?
Golden State: I hadn't heard it before, but it was released in 2014. Here it is.
So basically, this is one new recording (ASMTYD), one previously unreleased California Music song, and a collection of previously released but mostly unnoticed songs. It reminds me of the 2007(?) Starbucks album, which was mostly live stuff but had one track each from Brian, Mike, and Al. But this time it's a few more people throwing relative throwaways into the mix.

I like that version of "She Believes In Love Again". Does anybody know who produced it? While I'm glad the group didn't include any BB re-recordings on That's Why God Made The Radio", this track might've worked with a couple more 2012 background vocals.
I realize this version of "She Believes In Love Again" is 15 years old, and Bruce's voice probably deteriorated, at least slightly, since then. But, when I hear a song like this, it does make me wish for one more BB album. Bruce has to have at least one nice song he's been storing away for years. With the right producer, and that's never a given with the Beach Boys, I just have to think they could come up with something respectable along the lines of That's Why God Made The Radio.
