The lyrics sound like Van Dyke to me. It's got his "rhyme, but no reason" style to it.

John Tesh has recorded some really nice Christmas music.
Sure, sure ... but again: for 18-20 year old college kids!? My goodness! This was the era of Beck, Sheryl Crow, Pearl Jam, Seal, TLC, Boyz II Men, Blues Traveler. John Tesh?

Never heard "Son of a Son of a Sailor" before. After one listen - I like it, but not nearly as much as "Sail On, Sailor". It's far more unassuming, in my estimation. So, if I had to point to one thing, after just one listen, I'd say the excitement of "Sail On, Sailor" wins out.
Also, never heard of John Tesh...

I'd say the excitement of "Sail On, Sailor" wins out. There's excitement in "Sail On, Sailor"!? (In live versions, I'll grant it. But I think the studio version is a snoozer.)

Not the epitome of, but it's there. P.S. I'm currently debating whether or not to listen to that video you so thoughtfully shared. Update: Kapitan, I listened to a minute of it, I should have known by the "sax" in the title that I'd hate dislike it! By the way, if anyone ever wonders ( I know they don't) why I almost always give out ratings of 6 or above for Beach Boys songs/albums, it's because music like this exists. Music that I simply don't care for...at all.

I have to say I'm honestly surprised that three people are just hearing Son of a Son of a Sailor for the first time.

I have to say I'm honestly surprised that three people are just hearing Son of a Son of a Sailor for the first time. I may have heard it without realizing it. There's always that possibility. I really would like to check out more of his music one of these days.

I have to say I'm honestly surprised that three people are just hearing Son of a Son of a Sailor for the first time. I'm pretty sure the only Buffett song I know--or at least that I know I know--is Margaritaville.

At his best, Tesh is passable lite jazz-like muzak. At his worst, he is agonizingly annoying, New Agey lite jazz-like muzak.
There is one exception: the NBA on NBC theme song. He wrote that. It is great!

Too late! The NBA on NBC theme!? That's awesome. Thanks for sharing that.

My last Tesh-related post, hopefully ever: I just cannot stress enough that my college roommate, sophomore year, was into this. Like really, really into it. Not the NBA on NBC theme. The other stuff.
At the time, I was worshiping Queen, Zeppelin, and the Beatles above all, while still really a fan of the Doors, Hendrix, Van Halen, Steve Vai, the Who...mostly classic rock because I had largely bailed on modern music once grunge ruined it for everybody.I'm not saying everything I listened to was great or anything.
But what kind of 19-year-old guy loves John Tesh's New Age Jazz Lite? Made no sense then, makes no sense now.
And to be clear, I was a jazz composition major at the time. I loved, and still love, jazz. But to paraphrase Sen. Lloyd Bensten's barb to Sen. Dan Quayle, "I know jazz ... and you, sir, are not jazz."

Well, maybe the 90s were so shitty that they forced people to seek out John Tesh.

I'm pretty sure the only Buffett song I know--or at least that I know I know--is Margaritaville. Buffett is one of those guys that has a lot of standards among the fan base, but outsiders only know Margaritaville; maybe Come Monday or Cheeseburger in Paradise. The Parrotheads would probably have the following songs on their playlist: Son of a Son of a Sailor, He Went to Paris, Pencil Thin Mustache, Havana Daydreamin', It's My Job, The Captain and the Kid, Why Don't We Get Drunk, Fins, Volcano, Changes in Latitudes Changes in Attitudes, One Particular Harbor, ...basically anything on his first Greatest Hit album. And i can't recall the last time i heard any of those songs on mainstream radio.
