I like VDP's lyrics (and music) quite a bit, but I think Brian Wilson's best work was done in collaboration with Tony Asher. Maybe the Smile stuff had some higher peaks, but Pet Sounds is top to bottom the best thing Wilson ever did. Asher's lyrics are a huge part of why.

We all - including Tony Asher - know Brian Wilson's history of moving on to new music, lyricists, and collaborators. But I wonder if Tony, over the ensuing 55 years after Pet Sounds, ever expected the phone to ring again, and I don't mean for one-offs like "Everything I Need".

Mike Love and VDP have both been very vocal and fought hard for recognition of their contributions to their work with Brian. I don't know whether Tony Asher was content to let the acclaim for Pet Sounds fall mostly to Brian, but he definitely is under-recognized for his part in it.

I think we're looking at distinct personalities when comparing the three, maybe lumping Mike Love and Van Dykes Parks together, and separating Tony Asher. It's not surprising which two would be more vocal, and which one not. I do think, though, in most discussions of Pet Sounds over the years, Asher is given significant mention and praise for his contributions to Pet Sounds.
Tony Asher is certainly not a household name, but that has probably more to do with his lack of production since 1966 than NOT receiving recognition from his work on Pet Sounds.

But, on the other hand, I'm not as into lyrics as I am music, so I'll give him a pass on some of the acid alliteration on the Smile album.

You don't hear Tony Asher trying to associate themselves with Brian nearly as much as Mike and Dyke.

I've giggled gleefully many times to VDP's words.

Well, it's over. Is there any interest in everyone compiling their lists and voting on who has the best comp? Or should we wash our hands of this exercise and move on to something else (or nothing)?

I was thinking of doing some kind of album survivor poll. We probably all know which one would win, but it could be fun to see how we get there.

Oh dear. Please go ahead but count me out. I'm not a survivor poll person at all. What don't you like about them? I'd like them if they were the other way round! Name your favourite track from an album, then your next favourite... I just feel guilty summarily dismissing songs that cost one or more people far more talented than myself a lot of time, love and energy (not necessarily in that order). That's just the way I'm made.
