Sometimes I think (fantasize?) about a That Lucky Old Sun...Naked. Get rid of the spoken word poetry, eliminate the disgrace of what they did to "Can't Wait Too Long" (or assemble a more realized version), add one or two of the better bonus tracks, and then tweak the sequencing.

I like the removal of spoken bits, but otherwise I don't think there are any changes necessary. The only bonus track I like is a cover, "I'm Into Something Good," so I don't see any real reason to add that. (I think "Oh Mi Amore" and "Just Like Me And You" are fine, but inessential. I've got no use for "Message Man.")
I have nothing against what they did with "Can't Wait Too Long," much less do I consider it anything remotely resembling a "disgrace."
My biggest wish for this is just that it would have been the reunion album. I think it was perfect for that. But regardless, I think it's very, very good just as it is--much better than the actual reunion album (which I also really like).

Wow, that's very strong statement. I guess as far as sounding natural, like not super heavy on the synths, I would agree. His vocals were very good on those albums, too. But, all of that being said, despite the more natural sounding albums, the better/best songs of his solo career, and the (relatively) very good vocals - and for the sake of discussion I'll agree with you (except for WIRWFC) - is the magic there for you on those albums? On any of the solo albums? Do you hear it? Do you feel it? There's reasons some albums/songs are revisited through the years and some are left on the shelf... Very much so on the early solo albums. I knew all the "Brian is the genius of the group" stuff, but it was the 1980s solo recordings that really made me fall in love with Brian Wilson (in a purely platonic way, of course, lol). The songs just seemed to be about where I was at that stage in life. There was a yearning, and a loneliness in the lyrics of those songs - Being With the One You Love, Melt Away, There's So Many...that was me in 1988-1990 and beyond. When I was more settled (temporarily it turned out), the songs on Orange Crate Art and Imagination connected with me. Since then? Not so much. Maybe that's just me. Or maybe That's Not Me, lol. The songs on BWPS of course are beyond criticism, but the magic is missing from the recordings. The song "What I Really Want for Christmas" has that magic. The rest of the album is nice, but I rarely go back to it. TLOS is nice, but again, I rarely go back to it. I don't think these later albums were really important to Brian and co. It's expected if you are a touring musician that you have some product to promote, and I think that's the reason they continued to put albums out under Brian's name - just to have something out there. TWGMTR was much better than I expected it to me, and IMO that's probably where Brian's recording career should have ended.

Are there any Don't Worry Baby, Kiss Me Baby, Wouldn't It Be Nice, God Only Knows, Good Vibrations, Surf's Up moments? Not really. And, that's a really high bar. We've discussed that, even as good as the early 70s BB material is, it doesn't really hit those heights. But, I'd say, for an artist of advancing years, and considering Brian's best days seemed to be behind him, there is a bit of that old "magic" in songs like Forever You'll Be My Surfer Girl, Midnight's Another Day, What I Really Want for Christmas (the song), the closing trio on TWGMTR, Sail Away (NPP), etc.
