It's been over two months but Joshilyn is back with a new tutorial, one with a difference. I'll let her explain. I'll just add that she's looking very healthy. The change of locality is clearly doing her good. YouTube subscribers: 306, GoFundMe stands at $2,305

She's back! Joshilyn returns to Power Mower Land fully laden with instruments after a sabbatical of some five months, if you ignore (and do so at your peril) one highly illuminating tutorial at her parents' piano at round about the halfway mark. (Very sad news about the "cat of joy", although it wasn't entirely unexpected -- Missy's health had been going downhill for quite a while.) It looks certain that "ITBOMM" will be the next item on the menu. I know for a fact that this was a lot of work involving much straining of ears (I contributed an additional pair for a while). So, plenty to look forward to! YouTube subscribers: 358, GoFundMe stands at $2,310

In a recent post at Smiley, Joshilyn, after enthusing about the success of her YouTube channel, gives a rundown of what we can look forward to:
"2021 should bring better production values to the show, and a more diverse range of discussions. I will wrap up the Today LP, and then go straight into Summer Days. I plan to really get into the nitty gritty detail; covering instruments, studio techniques, production elements, and pretty much everything that happened musically to make these great productions.
"Then, after I finish the series on Summer Days, I plan to do something approaching a professional-level documentary on the production of Pet Sounds.
"Now, with my plans being aired, I really want to emphasize that what makes me happiest is being a successful evangelist for the Beach Boys music. And a big part of that is making people happy with the videos and engaging with what people are actually interested in. And it does me a lot of good to hear thoughts from discerning fans and listeners. So if you have any thoughts about what you'd like to see, please let me know. What does a successful video series about the Beach Boys music look like to you? I will remain the executive producer, but input and feedback is so dearly appreciated.
"So please reach out if you have any thoughts or ideas in how to continue spreading the word that this music is great. And I look forward to your viewership in the future!"

And here are the sax, string and oboe parts isolated and (as if that were not enough!) reproduced on all those instruments for your delectation. What an incredible achievement! This is not entirely unrelated to the "Power Mower" series. Joshilyn has just launched a reddit page devoted to the session musicians who played on many of the great hits of the '60s and later. It will cover not just the familiar names but also lesser known but no less important figures who for one reason or another have remained literally "behind the scenes". But see what she herself has to say: www.reddit.com/r/StudioMusicians/

It's been two and half months since Joshilyn last posted a video on YouTube. This new one is an informal first episode of a series she calls "Feels to Reels" featuring the harmonic building blocks of "Guess I'm Dumb". I know she has been very busy of late but still keen to get back to making her BB tutorials so this is sort of a stepping stone to the bigger forthcoming project of Summer Days...

Enjoyable for those of us who like chords, harmonies, how things fit together.

It's been a while -- nearly five months! -- but now she's back. In the first of a series of five-minute segments relating to the FF box set, Joshilyn Hoisington takes us through Dennis's treatment of the bass line in "Slip On Through":
Welcome back, JH. You've been missed!

This is so compelling and such a joy to just watch over and over again and listen and learn. The contrast between what one could have done and what Dennis actually did in that bass figure is so clearly expressed and what a joy.
After listening to Joshilyn's explanations, it's always fun to put the song on and say, oh yeah, listen to that, wow, I never heard that before but now I know what's going on.

Yes, she always manages to uncover or illuminate the most fascinating aspects of each track she discusses. She never did get round to "Bull Session" but I'm sure she would have had something interesting to say about that too! Between you and me, prof, I rate Joshilyn's video tutorials higher than the recent box set. And here's #2 in the mini-series, where "This Whole World" gets the JH treatment. Of course, we're still reeling from the * tutorial* in which she coaxes out the wild guitar licks buried in the mix of that track. It's gratifying to hear some of it shining through in the FF remix.

Well we all know that the beach boy music speaks directly to the human spirit because Carl said this, and now here we see the detailed scientific analysis of why that's true. I sit here with my jaw dropped listening to these details and each of these chords as they go together and I'm totally amazed.
There's a very short section in the movie I just wasn't made for these times where a professor does a similar analysis with the warmth of the Sun, so I wonder if Joshilyn has done that song because I think some similar changes of expectation occur. Pardon me if I missed that video but I think that is a parallel analysis we see in that movie.

And no, she hasn't done "The Warmth of The Sun" -- yet. I for one would certainly appreciate that. But we have so much to thank her for as it is!

And here we go with episode 3, which showcases track 3 of Sunflower: Well I don't think anyone watching this new (eight-minute) video will ever hear that D major chord the same way again! I think JH strikes just the right balance with your approach. There are bound to be people who enjoy the videos yet know little about music theory (I only know so much myself) and maybe don’t play piano and/or guitar. I’d say the level of technicality in the tutorials takes this nicely into account. But there’s no question of dumbing down either. Keep up the good work, Joshilyn.

As usual an excellent informative video!
However, I do respectfully disagree with the idea that "Add Some Music" is not an interesting song. There are all kinds of cool things going on throughout. For instance, I can hear some great guitar chords in other parts of the song, such as at the end of the "music is in my soul" phrase. That one always hits me hard for some reason.
That's just my own personal take. Once again, great video presented in an understandable way. Keep up the great work!

Just got around to the recent ones. I actually agree with Joshilyn that "Add Some Music" isn't an especially interesting song on its own: it's the arrangement, production, and performance that make it warrant attention. Otherwise it's just a pretty simple melody, basic chords, not a lot happening.
But that's not a slight; it actually is a compliment, because it shows what a good performance, a good arrangement, and good production can do. Not that you can polish a turd, as they say (apologies for the crudeness), but you can certainly lift a song up a few levels with interesting approaches to it.
Edit - I should add, in the previous video where she discusses the plagal cadence, "amen" is exactly how I kept it straight in school. The names of various things--chords within the keys, cadences, etc.--were sometimes hard to keep straight, but once my theory teacher said the plagal cadence was "amen," it was really easy for me to hear and identify. Having been forced to go to not just church, but a church with traditional Lutheran hymns, at least once a week my entire life up until I left home for college turned out to have some real value!
