And now the Power Mower is back--with a bang! This is Joshilyn's first video with the new set-up. In it, the brief intro to "Wouldn't It Be Nice" is examined to within an inch of its life. It's a long story but one told with authority and aplomb. JH is the business! I believe the lights have just gone on again in Beach Boys Land. I enjoyed the tutorial very much. It's always fun and educational to hear songs - especially Brian Wilson's songs - broken down like that. Thanks for sharing.

This is a brief follow-up to the above tutorial following a certain amount of discussion at probably not your favourite place online (I can't link it anyway). And there'll be more to come very soon!

And here we go with part three! This is a revelation, even for non-guitarists (although it helps to know where all the notes are): It's incredible the care and attention JH has been devoting to a mere 32 notes for so long now. An idée fixe in every sense of the word. What a pity Barney Kessel is no longer with us--I'm sure he'd be most impressed! Great to see Missy in there for the domestic touch in these tough times.

Here you go. Joshilyn isolates and explains the seven guitar parts and two bass parts in the rhythm section of "Do You Wanna Dance". You need to blow it up to full screen to grasp all the details. Wonderful stuff!

Wonderful stuff! Again, fascinating stuff. Didn't realize so many guitars were used to get that sound. I always thought "Do You Wanna Dance" could've rocked out a little bit more. It does somewhat, on the bridge it does, but the muddy mix doesn't help. I wish it sounded clearer like this video.
Does Joshilyn know about this board?

I often send her your and Luther's reviews, so yes, she knows about us.

Just to keep everyone up to date, this is lifted from the most recent aeijtzsche post "across the road" (my emphasis):
"I just wanted to pop in here and say that, indeed, I am very close to 100 subscribers, which is not that many compared to many channels, but seems like a lot to me! Thanks to all who have subscribed and are interested. The Beach Boys have been a light in the darkness for me many times (for whatever reason) and I continue to hope that I can help their music be a light for you during one of the darkest times in human history.
"To celebrate 100 subscribers, I will do some sort of celebratory video, so subscribe if you haven't yet, and also look forward to part one of the Sunflower Boxed Set pregame series about Slip on Through."

For completeness' sake, JH adds two brief Carl guitar flourishes (here at 2:12 and 2:56) recorded during the vocal sessions for "Good To My Baby", getting as close as possible to the studio conditions at that moment. (A perfectionist as always.) Sorry for my blooper, she says. As if apologies are necessary! www.gofundme.com/f/recording-computer-for-joshilyn

We don't have a Wrecking Crew topic, or anywhere else to post this where it won't get lost. And of course the "Power Mower" has featured Mr Ritz on at least one occasion, so why not here? With thanks to JH for the heads up:

The latest JH video, which I just managed to catch before heading off on holiday, is quite expansive. I do like her delivery--it's so natural and even a little fragile, despite her authority. Respect, my friend, for getting this done in these disheartening times.
I must watch this again soon. I was most taken first time round by her observation that the guitar/bass riff and the lead vocal are in unison during the chorus, a rare occurrence indeed until Hendrix, Cream and company made it standard fare.

This new episode, devoted to "When I Grow Up (To Be A Man)", arrived at YouTube while I was asleep. Occasionally I'm just still up when this happens, in which case I watch it without comment (I did that once--not a good idea at 1 AM!) and do my stuff in the morning. In fact, I still have to watch it all the way through--the timing has to be right--but from the brief excerpts I've seen it could turn out to be my favourite so far!
The thrilling start, in which JH shows off her prodigious bass guitar chops, sets the scene for the first guitar-less episode (Carl's part in the proceedings, while key to the overall sound, getting short shrift from JH). Instead, Alan's distinctive bass and Brian's harpsichord get the JH isolation treatment. She makes the pertinent comment that the whole-tone scale first heard at the start of the harpsichord motif was used by the Impressionist composers (Debussy, Ravel, etc) to suggest a dream-like ambience--and Brian and the Boys are dreaming of growing up! It's a fact that the discourse on each new episode takes off either at SS or EH--but hardly ever at both. This time (and last time) SS has won the day...

Every word a struggle, she says. I think JH does a wonderful job (read: labour of love). I love the Al-style workout at the beginning and her little smattering of Victor Wooten bass... What a talent!

And the videos keep coming. In this one JH discusses the Danelectro, how it differs sound-wise from the Fender precision bass and the "quandary" she occasionally finds herself in in distinguishing which is which on Beach Boys records.
There's plenty here even for non-guitarists to get their teeth into. And, if anyone has a uke lying around unused, I know someone who would love to take it off your hands! Seriously, Joshilyn needs one for "Ronda" and later on for other BB tracks. Enjoy!

Thanks to the generosity and swift action of two donors at her GoFundMe page, Joshilyn is now the proud owner of a ukulele! Here she can be seen playing it while explaining the intricacies of the Today! version of "Help Me, Ronda". Such a simple track, one might think, and so much to say about it!
YouTube subscribers: 156, GoFundMe stands at $3,030
