Potential huge seller or not, that would still be following up a live (mostly greatest hits) album and two greatest hits albums with another live (mostly greatest hits) album. Which is less than interesting for a lot of fans, whatever grade they achieved in Beach Boys History 101.

Sure, definitely possible.
I still think that doesn’t make its good strategic move. At some point the traction of the old music wears thin and you’re left as a decreasingly popular jukebox playing your own oldies. It was essential in the long term to remain a creative and productive band, and these years could certainly be seen as a failure in that respect.
Build a larger library, increase the odds of more hits.

What is seldom mentioned is that Endless Summer and Spirit of America were not the only compilations or "older" albums released at that time. Reprise was desperately trying to capitalize on the group's renewed popularity, too. Check out these releases that all came out in roughly one year's time back in 1974-75:

I didn't mention it by name, but I referred to Good Vibrations - Best Of The Beach Boys in my post quoted by PiedPiper. That was released during the Beachago tour. It's the only album they could muster during that period. Their efforts at both studio and live albums failed.

I was going to post this in the R.I.P. thread, but it might be a better fit here. This is a YouTube video uploaded by long-time BB fan, Mike Eder. It's The First Edition performing some Beach Boys' songs, and some of them are very surprising:

Thanks, SJS. I'd never seen this (or heard of them, frankly). Can't say I'm a fan of the very '70s variety show style arrangements, but it's cool they were doing them at all.

Some music fans might recognize the First Edition's drummer, Mickey Jones, who also played with Bob Dylan. Mickey also had an acting role in the movie, Vacation, and had a recurring role in the TV sitcom, Home Improvement.
