A good documentary about Pet Sounds including a lot of Tony Asher and The Wrecking Crew:

I think that doc was included as a special feature on the Pet Sounds live DVD.

I think that doc was included as a special feature on the Pet Sounds live DVD. Correct. That's the first I've seen it. I have the Pet Sounds Live CD but not the DVD. While Brian didn't really say anything earth-shattering, he was more into it than usual. And, again I always enjoy hearing the session players telling stories about the recording process.

I'm not judging Al, especially regarding his divorce from Lynda, but I was a little surprised that he went to the extent of changing the lyrics to omit Lynda's name. Hey, maybe Lynda requested it. And, as we know he also did a third version, "Lady Liberty".
I think "Lady Lynda" is the best song that Al ever wrote, and after "Good Timin'" and "Baby Blue" is my favorite song on L.A. (Light Album). But I think it was a case of diminishing returns as he changed the song around.

Yeah, maybe they had a bad divorce or he just didn't want to be reminded of her. I think changing the lyrics is a bit much, but I've never wrote a song about a now divorced wife or sang in front of thousands of fans!

I think rewriting the song was a bad decision. It cheapens one of his best songs, a hit song. If it makes you that uncomfortable, then retire it and write a new one. Near the end of that Wembley version it sounds like he starts to sing "Lady Lynda" but catches himself halfway and sings "Lady Lady". Nice. Just what the crowd was expecting!
After listening I tracked down the single version and a live version of "Lady Liberty". Al sounds sick at Farm Aid 1986, so that performance was very rough and Carl's lead vocal on the single version is poor.
Sorry for the negativity, but it irks me. Imagine if all other artists changed around the lyrics to their popular songs after a breakup or a change of heart or opinion of some kind?

I think rewriting songs is almost always a bad decision.

That's some excellent video quality. I wonder how much else from that show was recorded.

There's a longer video he did specifically for Ohio, but I haven't been able to find it.

Say what you want about the guy, but John Stamos had good taste in music, and he DID get them on his shows:
