This is one of the earlier BW interviews where he seems to be regularly contradicting himself or just lying for no reason, just talking. 1974.
- Doesn't remember writing most of the band's music, including Surfin' Safari and (get this) Good Vibrations (which he then goes on to describe the recording of) - Doesn't know what Transcendental Meditation is, then goes on to talk about it (and doubt its effectiveness)
- Worked hard, 24/7, night and day, in Holland ... except no, everyone was always going here and there and they'd only briefly reunite to work for 15 minutes one day, two days a week later, etc. - Acts as if he just barely recalls some Leiber and Stoller "inspiration" for Student Demonstration Time
He does say that Roger McGuinn owns a laser and is "where it's at."
In some ways, this was a precursor to interviews to come. But exactly opposite of the past few decades' worth, it doesn't seem to be to get the interview over with: he seems to quite enjoy the conversation. So he's either just confused, drugged enough not to know, or not opposed to just saying whatever pops into his head.

Yes, some of the interview is troubling, but when I hear these 1974 interviews (and I think there's a couple out there), it is very frustrating. I can't help but wish Brian would've gotten help - the appropriate kind - right there and then. Brian was still salvageable in several ways. 1975 must've been a terrible year for Brian because, when he resurfaced in 1976, he was somewhat different and...much worse.

I had this video recommended to me by YouTube and watched today: a brief (<8 minutes) documentary of the Caribou ranch studio. There are a few Beach Boys references, though no specific stories about them. But it does run through some of the artists who worked there and gives a good overview of the facilities. Pretty impressive.

Here is a pretty recent--late July 2021--Beach Boys show from Elk Grove Village, Illinois. Pretty good video quality (shot from single camera), not the best audio but not bad.
Also I noticed in checking the thread to ensure this hadn't been posted already that most of those vids I'd linked in the spring and early summer have been pulled. Hmpf.

So strange seeing this kind of "performance." But I realize it was more or less the standard of the day.
Also, did Mike ever appear sans hat again?

I love this song so much though. I can watch this video, over and over, along with “Celebrate the News”, with Carl on drums. One of the last times we get to see Carl without a beard! I just remember how excited I would get when one of my favorite’s were set to perform on his show or on Ed Sullivan. It may look kinda cheesy now, but it just takes me back to a good place.

I came across this wondrous footage while browsing Smiley: That's very cool footage, jk. A fascinating perspective. As I look at that audience in 1971, they could've easily passed for an audience in 1967, an audience that maybe the band was a little leery of performing for - I'm thinking of the infamous Monterey Pop Festival. It's interesting to think how things changed for the band in four years.

I saw this video recommended by YouTube today and watched it, a vocal coach reacting to "Don't Worry Baby."
She has good things to say about it, but the funny thing is that one of her main compliments she makes is how relaxed they are, how they aren't tightening up when they're singing the falsetto ... but that's not a live performance! It's pretty easy to be relaxed when you're mimicking singing to the track and don't even have a microphone!
Even so, it's fun watching her obviously feel the joy of the music.

I love this live version so much better than the one on The Beach Boys Party! Just beautiful.
