I didn't know where to put this so I put it here. I don't know a lot of these albums, but check out 55, 27, 12, and 6!

Bet you loved that #6! But what's with their description?
Also, let's not make Christgau's ratings any kind of marker: that guy is crazy. I swear a quarter of his reviews are indecipherable.

I had no idea Christgau gave BWPS an A+. WTF...

Thanks for the link. I'll dismiss the first two paragraphs, referring to Pet Sounds as only a "good record", and claiming that the band only had three great albums - and choosing Smiley Smile and Wild Honey as two of them.
It's actually not a bad review. I don't agree with a lot of it, but there are some admissions such as Brian's hitting the notes but not conveying the innocence of SMiLE's content. Hello! Um, that's pretty important, dontcha think. Still surprised by the *****

"Rock critics help listeners find the best of the best." HAHAHAHA. No wonder MSN is considered fake news.

One of the most infamous moments in rock history, to be sure. He actually discussed it on the Letterman show a couple of months later.

kds, had you heard this? A flamenco tribute to Randy Rhoads, "Crazy Train," featuring Steve Stevens (Billy Idol, the "Top Gun" theme, his solo band Atomic Playboys). I recently heard an interview with Stevens where he mentioned this, and I promptly forgot, but I saw it recommended on YouTube this morning.
He had said in the interview he wasn't interested if the project was going to just redo the song as it was, saying there was no point in trying to outdo Rhoads at what he already did so well. But apparently he had some flamenco education when he was younger, and that idea appealed to him.

Ghost released their fifth LP - Impera - last month. The melodic hard rock band continues to sell albums while polarizing the hard rock / heavy metal fan world with their increasingly pop flavored blend of hard rock. Recently Ghost frontman Tobias Forge and Def Leppard's Joe Elliott have expressed a mutual adulation for each other's bands. Now, I think this is pretty cool, but man is this going to set the metal elitist on fire. ultimateclassicrock.com/def-leppard-ghost/

It's cute how everyone hates Def Leppard ... one of the best-selling hard rock bands of all time. So clearly, yeah, EVERYONE hates them. Not "real" metal? Oh well. If somebody else would rather be totally pure, real metal and sell a dozen tickets per show in a crappy little bar, or release albums to an audience of close family only, that's fine. Have at it. But Def Leppard (not a favorite of mine, but not for that reason) obviously has had an effect on a huge number of people, been heard by damn near everybody on earth. I'd think that would be a goal.

There's also the popular take amongst metalheads in regards to Def Leppard "Their first album was good, but then they went pop." Metallica, or really any metal-ish band that manages to break into the mainstream, tend to get the same treatment. That's one of the reason Ghost tends to get a lot of hate among "pure, real" metalheads.

Yeah, though I have to say "going pop" doesn't really resonate with me as a serious criticism. At its root, it means trying to appeal to a wide audience.
Um, yeah. What kind of performer doesn't want to bring in a wide audience?
Now if you totally contradict your own artistic taste to attract the audience, OK, I get that critique. But if not, if you just do your best within what you believe in or enjoy? Why the hell wouldn't you do that?
Beyond that, the criticism usually is directed at acts who just have better, cleaner production. So it's more a matter of budget and professionalism than anything else. (The same critique always is aimed at indie rock bands. They sign with major labels or get a hit and suddenly they're these awful sell-outs.)

"Going pop" is also a fallacy about 90% of the time when used by metal heads. When I hear / read somebody say something like "Metallica became a pop band on the Black Album," I have to assume that person has never listened to pop music, or any other subgenres of rock music for that matter. The Black Album made Metallica more accessible, but it's still a very heavy album. I think it's fair to maybe not like it because it's not a thrash album, but making up shit like saying it's a "pop album," just makes you sound like a buffoon. One of my favorite interview segments was from Jason Newsted on Metallica's Behind the Music. "Yeah, we sell out......every seat in the house."

Apparently, former Priest guitarist KK Downing is unhappy at Tim "Ripper" Owens not being included in Judas Priest's RNRHOF honor. ultimateclassicrock.com/k-k-downing-ripper-owens-judas-priest-rock-hall/I get showing support for your current bandmate (Owens sings for KK's Priest), but let's be realistic KK. Owens was a blip on the radar in Priest history. They were playing 300 capacity venues in the early 00s before Rob Halford rejoined the band. Hell, the Hall didn't even include Ronnie James Dio when Sabbath got the nod, and two of the albums he was on are considered metal classics.
