This thread was prompted by a trio of videos posted down the road apiece by Stephen Desper. In the blurb accompanying the third of those videos, about the engineering aspects of Gaucho, uploader/interviewer Tyler Burns lists the key questions he put to the album's engineer Elliot Scheiner. The one that fascinated me was "What percentage of the drums [on the album] were real and how much were the Wendell drum computer?" The answer? "Babylon Sisters" was all real drums, "Hey Nineteen" was Wendell (the fills were live), "Glamour Profession" was all Wendell, "Time Out of Mind" was all real drums, "My Rival" was all Wendel and "Third World Man" was real drums. If a drummer was credited for a song which used the Wendel, it simply meant that his drum samples had been used in the Wendell for that song. The drumming on the title track is a little trickier to fathom (I've mentioned this in my reply to SWD). Apparently, it's compiled from Jeff Porcaro's drumming on 46 (!) separate takes, which were then "spliced together", according to one source. Was this a pre-Wendell solution? After assimilating all these questions and answers, Gaucho will never sound the same! That aside, it remains my favourite Steely Dan album. Here is that "tricky" title track: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gaucho_(album)

As someone who has been binging on The Dan lately, I am very happy to see this thread. My favorite albums are CBAT and Aja, with Gaucho third. I’m asking for the Acoustic Sounds UHQR for Christmas.
Here is a very early Dan production to get us going. Thanks jk!

I've heard CBAT and dig the two singles and "Dirty Work", but my true love for the Dan begins with Pretzel Logic, skips Katy Lied (which I've never heard) and continues through Scam, Aja (with reservations -- it's a little too clean for me), Gaucho and Nature. As for hearing Dan tracks in unusual places, I first heard "Rikki" while holidaying with my then girlfriend (now wife) in the South of France, a track from their final album in Granada (Spain) and "Cousin Dupree" while travelling though Italy with my son to see them perform in Lucca... This is the title track from Pretzel Logic. I love the first line -- it's the one thing Fagen and Becker most certainly did not want to do! en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pretzel_Logic_(song)

Then again, Southerners aren't real fond of "Yankees". Great song.

There are literally no bad tracks on Can't Buy A Thrill. "Fire In The Hole" is one of my favorite deep tracks from the album ... The Lyrics, the piano, the guitar, the drums, the melody, everything is just killer. I just close my eyes, listen and enjoy!

It was a segment of * this extraordinary video* (starting at about 1:06:40) that got me looking around here for an existing Steely Dan thread and not finding one... One of the songs listed on one of the tapes is called "With The Fez On", a working title for "The Fez", a fantastic instrumental with a smattering of wacky lyrics: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Royal_Scam

Oh dear, I really have been shirking my Dan duty... I first heard "Cousin Dupree" while travelling through the Italian countryside with my son driving on our way to see Steely Dan perform at Lucca. There were some irritating folks in front of us (Americans, I'm afraid) who were singing along to every gosh darn freaking song except one obscure track. It was a great show nonetheless, with a fabulous array of backing musicians. (The song's wiki is a hoot.) en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cousin_Dupree
