With A Little Help From My Friends - This IS a great song ... but not a great version. The lead vocal drives me nuts with the weird accents given to certain words/notes: what would you THINK if I SANG out of TUNE, would you STAND up... like he's sliding into them and pushing up the fader as each continues. Strange delivery. This was one of the first songs I listened to this week and I thought it was a shoo-in, but it ended up at #11. It really is a great song. Listening to this stripped-down version always seems to remind me of that (I think Beatles fans tend to take it for granted). I actually don't mind the phrasing throughout so much, but it kills me that he flubs the climactic note so badly. I really dig it 'til that point. Then I start questioning why the lead is Bruce slowed down. Just odd. Darn right "With A Little Help From My Friends" is a great song. It might be my favorite song on Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band! However, the Beach Boys' version is a disappointment. Lifeless vocals. They sound stoned. Other than the bass (which is excellent, who is playing it?) the track ain't nothing special either. Actually, The Beatles' version sounds more like The Beach Boys than The Beach Boys' version.

While the lead vocal is certainly imperfect, I think the backing vocals are very nicely sung.

It's interesting how many covers are in this batch of songs, especially considering they weren't doing a covers album in this period and by 1969 or so, everyone was writing quite a bit.
And at least from my perspective, those covers tended to fall short. I love "...From My Friends" and "The Letter, etc., but not so much as recorded by the Boys. But "Game of Love," "Rock and Roll Woman," "Walk On By," "Riot," "Ol Man River"... Big ol' bunch of covers.
