I just realized I am the only vote (so far) for Don't Go Near the Water. That surprises me a little. Not a lot--I know it's not exactly Wouldn't It Be Nice--but I thought maybe somebody else would pick it. Anyway, I guess if I couldn't rep Feet, at least I got to be a contrarian with that one! (Actually I am not making picks based on contrarianism, I swear. However often I might seem like it...) Don't Go Near the Water is a song that's dropped off for me in recent years. Maybe I listened to it too many times when I was first really getting heavy into The Beach Boys in 2012, 13, and 14. At that time, I might've considered it at least for my top ten, but I really didn't give it a thought here. Too many other candidates. On the flipside of that, there's no way I'd have considered Hold On Dear Brother back then.

My picks, in order of appearance in the poll:
Long Promised Road Feel Flows 'Til I Die You Need a Mess of Help to Stand Alone Marcella All This Is That Sail On, Sailor California The Trader Only With You
My top four in this poll: 1. Feel Flows 2. Sail On, Sailor 3. Long Promised Road 4. 'Til I Die
If the 1971 version of "Surf's Up" had been included, it would slot in at #2 ahead of SOS.

If the 1971 version of "Surf's Up" had been included, it would slot in at #2 ahead of SOS. I hadn't thought about it, but it would have definitely made my "immediately in" list (which was 7 songs). I hadn't rated my songs, so I can't say where. Though I can say, very high. (Maybe I ought to rate my songs.)

Some of us were thinking this would be a tough choice, with a lot of quality across the board on these songs. (Good quality control, I think Sheriff John Stone called it.) I think that's playing out so far in the voting, with 20 of 28 songs having received at least one vote and only one song ("Til I Die") a unanimous choice. (Two more, "Long Promised Road" and "Sail On Sailor," are one vote shy of unanimous. On the latter, I'm the dissident.) I wonder which poll so far has had the highest percentage of songs receiving a vote. I might have to go back and look.

I've been doing an analysis on those things and will post results shortly! (Because I'm just sure everyone cares!)

Interestingly, I guess this poll is actually pretty average in terms of the number of songs getting votes.
I was surprised to see 1976-77 at the top of the list, maybe because I was thinking of that in terms of polls like the other early 70s, when it seems most people see the music as pretty solidly good (if not as often great as it had been in the mid 60s). I suspect with 76-77, it was in some cases more of a chore coming up with 10 songs they really liked. And of course a few don't like Love You at all, while I would lean heavily toward that over 15BO...

I think a similar thing can be said about 1967-68, with Smiley Smile being the divisive album in that case. And, even though Friends is a bit of a fan favorite, favorite tracks seem to be pretty all over the map.

I listened to Sail On Sailor again tonight on Apple Music while cooking dinner and have to say it is pretty wonderful and I am starting to appreciate it more. I reviewed my votes and decided I still was happy with them, though “Hold On Dear Brother” is really growing on me. Might be time to bite the bullet and get a hard copy. I think it would be wonderful on vinyl. Just amazed at how good The Beach Boys music was during this era. Why it wasn’t more appreciated back in the day, I will never comprehend. I also don’t know why most of you don’t love “Funky Pretty”.

I do love "Funky Pretty," but we only get 10 votes.

I also don’t know why most of you don’t love “Funky Pretty”. To me, "Funky Pretty" feels unfinished. It's funny, because the vocal interplay is complex but the instrumental track feels like a demo. It is actually a song that has dropped in my estimation over the years. I definitely don't dislike it, it just doesn't live up to the standard of my favorites.

Not bad, but I think it's the weak link on an otherwise stellar album, but unfortunately ends the album on a somewhat "meh" note. I tend to fell the same about Cool Cool Water.

In both cases, one could say it's a matter of the group being so desperate for Brian Wilson compositions that they were willing to take anything. Both songs have some brilliant ideas, but neither seems to live up to its promise, in my opinion. In both cases, I think there are ideas better than what the others would come up with, but the finished productions aren't necessarily as good as the best of the others' of the era.

By album (chronologically):
-Long Promised Road -Disney Girls -Til I Die
-You Need A Mess Of Help To Stand Alone -Marcella -Hold On Dear Brother -Cuddle Up
-Sail On, Sailor -California -Only With You
"All This Is That" and "Big Sur" were tough omissions. These results are consistent with how I rate/rank CATP. Track-for-track, it's very strong (and underrated).
I think "Marcella" is the most snubbed track this week. Fans seem to sort of dismiss it for not being more like the live version. Which, in my opinion, on the whole, isn't better.
