Depends on the cutoff for "all-timer"! I mean, it's a beautiful, haunting track. I really like it. I'd put it in my top 5 of this particular poll. But I see I didn't even list it on my Top 100 back in that thread of March '22. (That seems like an odd omission. I'm not sure how consciously it was omitted, but I think if I did a list now, it would make it.) So if all-timer has to be in the top few tunes by a group? Then no, I'm afraid not--at least not for me. But if you mean a song that stands the test of time, still beloved 60 years after its release? A song that transcends probably 99%+ of songs released in that same span? Then absolutely!

I think Lonely Sea is good, but I don't think it's an all timer. It's a nice change of pace on an album full of upbeat surf rock songs, but I think The Beach Boys would release a slew of better ballads.

No, I don't think "Lonely Sea" is an all-timer, but it is a very emotional song, and easily one of Brian's most sensitive vocals. I wish Brian or Gary Usher would've substituted the spoken-word bridge with a cool, slow, surf guitar one.
You rarely hear or read about "Lonely Sea". It didn't make a lot of comps and was never (I don't think) performed live. It is surprising that it was pulled off of Surfin' U.S.A. (a few albums removed) for a movie, but I guess it worked.

I think "Lonely Sea" is a borderline all-timer. It definitely has the magic. I wonder if that's more the song than the recording? But that recording is haunting. Hmmm. If this poll were asking which ten tracks we'd keep from this era - if we could only listen to ten for the rest of our lives - I'd definitely vote for "Lonely Sea". As an aside, I really do wish "Lonely Sea" were on Surfin' Safari. In every way, it would have fit perfectly.

The top 8 or so were very easy this week, but then I had a dozen other tracks vying for two spots.
1. Surfer Girl 2. Little Deuce Coupe 3. Surfin' U.S.A. 4. In My Room 5. Surfin' Safari 6. Catch a Wave 7. Hawaii 8. Custom Machine 9. Be True To Your School 10. Ballad of Ole Betsy
It pains me not to vote for "Lonely Sea", "Car Crazy Cutie", and "Your Summer Dream".

Some pretty good tunes there, but this list emphasizes for me how much the BB's upped their game in 1964-65! Yes, Brian and the boys upped their game in 1964-65, but if you take what I think will be the Top 7 consensus (in no particular order) from this poll - and a few stragglers - most of those songs have consistently been a part of the live setlists for 60 years. That's almost 1/3 of the setlist! So, in some ways, these particular years might not get the credit they deserve - at least in many fans' (and Mike Love's) eyes.
1. Surfin' Safari 2. Surfin' U.S.A. 3. Surfer Girl 4. In My Room 5. Little Deuce Coupe 6. Be True To Your School 7. Catch A Wave Honorable Mention: - 409 - Shut Down - Hawaii
