Have any of you listened to the recently released Giles Martin Dolby Atmos mix of Pet Sounds? I was pretty excited for it, but alas, am not blown away. I still prefer the AP 45 RPM Stereo Vinyl and the DCC Gold CD. I do hear a few things I’ve never heard before, but sometimes the added clarity of sounds is a bit annoying. I also feel like the mix is a bit lacking in bass. It just seems to lack a bit of the lower register oomph of the previously mentioned versions. Also - not sure it’s my imagination or not, but some of the songs seem like they are sped up. It’s an interesting listen, but not my cup of tea. I’m going to try it out on my various different Bluetooth speakers this weekend and see if my opinion changes. I don’t have an Atmos speaker setup, so I can see how it might be very interesting if you do. It feels like the sounds want to move around a bit. The vocals are super clear - like Too clear. The vocals seem a bit too raw. You can feel the train moving past you at the end, so that is really cool. It’s only currently available streaming. What is your opinion?

The strange thing is in the interview with Giles Martin, he speaks of wanting to make the songs sound the way they make you feel, but from my limited resource listening on my Klipsch speakers, it sounds to me like he wanted to make sure you hear ALL of the sounds and rawness of the vocals without doubling or reverb. I think the album loses a bit of its magic because of that. Might be a fun ride with a proper Atmos setup though. You won’t miss a thing, and the sounds will travel all around you. I’d be looking out for that train. Even with two speakers, it sounds like it’s all around you.
On a second listening, the songs seem to be at proper speed, I think it’s the rawness of it all that threw me off. I’m missing that reverb. The vocals feel faster without it.
And now I will venture to Hoffman to see what the music snobs with $50,000 worth of Stereo equipment think.🤣

I don't have anything that plays Dolby Atmos -- or any of the streaming services in question, for that matter.

Actually, just as I'd never heard of this release until this thread, I'd never heard of Dolby Atmos until this thread! Shows what kind of audiophile I am... But if the music is on streaming services, I can just listen through headphones later this weekend. We'll see how it goes.

In order for me to hear the Atmos effect on my wired Beats, I had to set Dolby Atmos “Always On” and enable Sound Check, in the music setting on my iPhone. Any iPhone 7 and above has the capability to play spatial audio. Not sure how it works on other devices and services though. I’ve had Apple Music for years. It’s well worth the $9.99 a month.

Pitchfork did a little article on this new mix yesterday. You can read it here.

I listened to the samples on the link and I think it sounds pretty good. I don't have a Dolby Atmos set up. I just listened on my computer speakers and I liked it. To carllove's point, it is different, but it's a mix I could become comfortable with. It's not loud and boisterous like some Pet Sounds' mixes I've heard. The separation is cool, and you can hear emphasis on instruments that you aren't used to hearing. I think the vocals are mixed just the tiniest tad up front. I guess it resembles Mark Linett's stereo mix, but more subtle. I'll have to check this out further.

Here is a new interview with Giles Martin released in Variety yesterday, primarily about the new Pet Sounds release. I've quoted here a few sentences on one point I think is important with respect to mixing Pet Sounds: "I’ve got to be careful I don’t split the texture too much of the album in itself, because it is meant to (be heard as one thing). I get people writing me saying, “You know, we don’t need to hear everything” — and I think they’ve got a good point. It’s meant to be a mush. It’s like the way some people would complain about high definition. Because you are meant to listen to a song. So I have to be careful I don’t rip things apart too much. At the same point, there’s such deep texture within this record that it’s worth exploring that and listening to flavors. It is like cooking — it’s like having heightened flavors, and being able to taste everything, I think."

Following Giles Martin's mix of Pet Sounds, five more Beach Boys albums are now available in Dolby Atmos. Mark Linett mixed Surfin USA, Surfer Girl, Little Deuce Couple, Shut Down Vol. 2, and All Summer Long in the format from the original source tapes. www.udiscovermusic.com/news/five-beach-boys-albums-dolby-atmos/
