I'm a little late here, considering we're already almost one full month into 2023, but for fun, I figured I'd post a wish list for stuff I'd love to see this year in music.
1. New music from David Gilmour - Last year when Pink Floyd released the surprise single Hey Hey Rise Up, it really got me pining for more Gilmour guitar work. By his own admission, Gilmour is not the biggest workaholic in the world, and he obviously doesn't owe us anything. But, it's been almost eight years since his last solo album, so another album would be most welcome. Especially if it included a tour.
2. Rainbow Tour - This wish is probably the most unrealistic on my list. When Ritchie Blackmore put together a new version of Rainbow in 2016, there were some hints at a possible tour. So far, Rainbow has only played some festivals in Europe. I've been complaining a lot about the prices of shows lately, but I'd gladly overpay to see Ritchie play a Strat in person. I did see him with Blackmore's Night, but he only played acoustic guitar and lute at that show.
3. Van Halen Archives - After Eddie Van Halen passed away a little over two years ago, Alex and Wolfgang Van Halen apparently started to go through the vaults at 5150 Studios. One has to imagine what possible treasures are hidden there. Van Halen has never been a band to release outtakes or live material that we're used to seeing from legacy acts, so anything from the vaults would be greeted with open arms.
4. Iron Maiden Legacy of the Beast DVD / BluRay - Iron Maiden's 2018-19 Legacy of the Beast Tour was called the most ambitious in the band's history. Yet, the live album from that tour did not have a home video companion. Considering the tour featured all the visual bells and whistles, this felt like an odd choice to me. I know there are some pro shows on YouTube, and I might have bought a DVD of their set at Rock in Rio that year (shhhh), it would be nice to have an official product.
5. Pink Floyd The Wall Live DVD - There have been pro shot concerts from Pink Floyd's epic 1980-81 Wall Tour circulating for a long time. They teased fans in 2000 with an audio only live release, and a documentary that included some live clips, but to date, nothing official has been released. Granted, 2023 will be all about promoting the 50th Anniversary of Dark Side of the Moon for Floyd, so maybe this will have to wait until 2029 when The Wall hits that milestone.
6. Definitive Beach Boys Doc - The tribute show is happening in a couple weeks. So, maybe this is a wish that could come to pass before year's end.
