The robust discussion about the upcoming Beach Boys tribute show had me thinking about tributes in general. A couple of people mentioned A Concert for George, which wasn't necessarily high on my list ... but it did remind me of something related that is. And YouTube was kind enough to remind me of it just now, so I rewatched it:
The Rock 'n' Roll Hall of Fame performance of "While My Guitar Gently Weeps" by Tom Petty, Steve Winwood, Jeff Lynne, Dhani Harrison, and of course, Prince. This might be my favorite performance (and is definitely among my favorite performances) of any tribute, ever. It also shows how unreal a guitarist, and yes, scene-stealer, Prince was. But the joy on Dhani's face at times, not to mention on Prince's and on Petty's, makes me think it was all in good fun. What a solo. (I also love that Prince was at the side of the stage, out of the spotlight, for everything until his solo.) (Also, the aux percussionist was really into his job, Nelson Bragg-style.)
Use this thread for any comments or links to tribute or cover performances you want to share or discuss.

The first one that comes to mind for me is Extreme's Queen medley during their set at the Freddie Mercury Tribute Concert. Not only was it somewhat ballsy to do a medley on songs that would be performed later that day with the surviving Queen members, but it was just so well done.

Oooh, obvious omission on my part in my first post! That is also right up there with the tune I posted. And overall, I will say--without any competition, as far as I can recall off the top of my head--that was the best tribute from start to finish. I didn't love it all, but Robert Plant, Roger Daltrey, GnR, Extreme, George Michael, and on and on ... really strong lineups spanning Freddie's "elders" to then-new acts, with cool performances.

One of my favorites is The 30th Anniversary Concert Celebration for Bob Dylan. A 30th Anniversary of any type isn't usually one that is celebrated, or celebrated to this extent, but who cares. It was spectacular! The house band was Steve Cropper on guitar, Donald "Duck" Dunn on bass, Booker T. Jones on organ, and Jim Keltner and Anton Fig on drums. G.E. Smith served as musical director as well as providing guitar and mandolin. And the guest artists? An impressive and eclectic group from country/rock/pop music. It had to be an honor just to be invited, and one gets the feeling that nobody said "no". Check out the artists/setlist below, including a few songs from Mr. Zimmerman himself:

I'd have to agree, from start to finish, the Freddie show is a very solid show.
