The Beach Boys channel is returning to SiriusXM for the next month. This announcement also includes: - Mention of a special to be run on the channel in which indie pop band AJR pick their favorites and talk about the band. (I admit, I have never heard of AJR.) - A poll in which you can pick up to 25 Beach Boys songs to go toward the channel's eventual Top 60. blog.siriusxm.com/beach-boys-channel-2023/They were pretty popular from 2015-2020 or so, haven't seen much from them lately. They also did a solid version of Darlin' on Mike's solo album.

I listened a few times when it came out and when we rated it, but, uh, yeah. Whoops. Totally blanked.

By the way, I think the aforementioned poll is buggy: while it says you can vote for up to 25 songs, it stopped allowing me to select songs at 20. As if I weren't stressed enough trying for 25! Well, I did my fair share by voting in the poll for mostly deep tracks, even writing-in one. And wouldn't you know it -- I got in the car this morning, turned on Sirius, and they were playing "Surfin' Safari" yet again. But I also got to hear "Add Some Music," so it wasn't all the same old same-old-playlist.

Lately I've been peeking at local news stations' articles of upcoming Beach Boys concerts. I've been a little surprised that, I think universally, without fail, they all say some variation of: "Note: founding members Brian Wilson, Al Jardine, and David Marks will not perform."
This seems to be the case both in what appear to be reprinted press release blurbs and in stories with local authors.
Have they been so clear about this in the past? I know there have been lawsuits between factions through the years over fans' expectations, but I just can't recall having seen something so blunt and specific. Is it a post-C50 thing, or an attempt to clarify about misconceptions of a 60ths, or just the longtime standard that I wasn't aware of? It's so consistent, it has to be coming from Mike's team.

Is it a post-C50 thing, or an attempt to clarify about misconceptions of a 60ths, or just the longtime standard that I wasn't aware of? It's so consistent, it has to be coming from Mike's team. I think it's an issue that started to spring up after the 2012 reunion tour. Obviously most Beach Boys' fans, or music fans in general, don't follow the band as closely as we diehards do. I can see where there could/would be some confusion. I've mentioned recent Beach Boys' concerts I attended where I've heard fans ask, "Which one is Brian Wilson?" or "Now, which ones are original Beach Boys?"
In addition to that, in promoting post-2012 concerts, the occasional photo was (is still?) used that featured the 2012 lineup including Brian, Al, and David. In a related matter, while it isn't really advertising the group, Mike & Bruce's shows feature so many old photos on those large screens of Beach Boys that aren't present for the actual concert. I'm assuming the fans know that but I'm not exactly sure, and I don't mean to be condescending.
On another thread, we were discussing group meetings and the Beach Boys' attorneys' involvement. I wouldn't be surprised if not just one, but a few Beach Boys' factions were complaining about the misleading advertising, and that it (NOT using misleading advertising) became a specified BRI policy going forward.

A very positive review of one of the Beach Boys' Hollywood Bowl Fourth of July shows, though actually from their show on the 3rd. (I haven't seen a review yet of last night's.) The show included an orchestra, fireworks, and John Stamos.

I concur with the above linked review and Nater's review of an earlier show. This new lineup is coming into it's own. The new drummer has a great lead/harmony voice and does a great job on Darlin. He really gives the band a constant energy boost as well with terrific presence despite an unconventional drum set-up. The new guitarist is an excellent player with amazing tone that emulates the time period. Can't wait to see them next month in NY state !

Here is a review of the BBs' July 4th show. One interesting thing is, Stamos drummed and sang lead on "Darlin'." Recently, the new drummer has sung it. Prior to that, Cowsill sang it. Is there some rule that whoever sits behind the drums gets to sing lead on "Darlin'"? If Brian ever goes back out on the road, I guess Mike D'Amico will get his first live lead at a BW show... And the review includes this amusing line: "[Sugar Ray's Mark] McGrath seemed to be having the time of his life, even though it was a little confusing as to why he was there."

The line, "McGrath seemed to be having the time of his life, even though it was a little confusing as to why he was there." cracked me up.
OK, I realize John Stamos has a way of popping up on the 4th Of July and on some high(er) profile performances, especially TV ones. But, there's something about that John Cowsill quote (on his Facebook page?) a few weeks ago where he mentions something like it was John Stamos' idea to make the recent band changes (with Cowsill and Scott Totten exiting). That quote/idea has been sticking in my head, and I can't help but wonder if, going forward, Stamos will have a more prominent role with the band - in a few roles actually.

Between collaborating with McGrath and Hanson, Mike must really think that 1997 was some sort of peak in terms of pop music.

I'm not a Stamos hater, and I could care less about McGrath and Hanson, but it is frustrating how Mike is only able to attract lightweights to his shows and records, when you scroll around the rock & roll world and see all of these cool guest appearances (and in many cases the guests become actual band members).

At least the Stamos association makes some sense. He's been associated with The Beach Boys since the mid 80s, when The Beach Boys were still a relevant entity. But, the recent stuff with Mark McGrath and Hanson is just the only kind of odd that you get from the later day Beach Boys. I can't help but wonder (please let me) if those collaborations were brought on by Brian's guests on NPP. Brian got Sebu, Nate Ruess, and Kasey Musgraves, who can we get? Umm, Mark McGrath, Hanson, and AJR.

Don't forget the crappy bro-country group! (I forget their name. Two guys, though.)
Really Brian had started it 20 years ago with Eric Clapton and Elton John on GIOMH. (Or, if you prefer, with Bob Dylan on Sweet Insanity!)
