I don't know what to make of that John Stamos reference, but it appears that The Beach Boys (Mike & Bruce anyway) and Brian's camp are really hush-hush lately when it comes to details about what's going on - or not going on - with their lives, careers, and corporation. If Stamos did, in fact, get some new "title" (official or unofficial) and if Brian is, indeed, retired from music...as a long-time fan it would be nice to officially know.

Sounds like Stamos acted unofficially based on that wording (“friends”).
On the Brian front, unless he’s decided that he has no plans to ever perform or release music again (which I highly doubt he’ll ever feel comfortable deciding), then there’s nothing to announce. And it kinda irks me how some fans seem to want Brian to “make it official” just for their own sakes. Anyway, no offense meant, SJS. I’ve seen many fans express something to that effect and that’s just how I feel.
Edit: It’s also highly likely that his absence is health related. In effect, a forced retirement. Or, in other words, not his decision. I imagine the hope in that case would be improved health and, possibly, a return to music. In this sort of situation, again, it doesn’t feel right to criticize the lack of formal announcement (IMO). It’s just not as simple as an average person deciding that they’ve retired from their profession. Presumably fans realize that, but the criticisms I’ve seen are awfully matter-of-fact.

"And that's the new direction John Stamos has in mind for his friends The Beach Boys" sounds more official than unofficial to me. There would be no other reason I can think of to link Stamos' name with the announcement/move. Because John Cowsill used the term "his friends" doesn't take away from that, for me anyway. It just appeared that Cowsill didn't want to get into it any further than that.
I'm not trying to stir up sh--, but it is a bit odd that Brian quits the Chicago tour before it was over, says not one word at the Grammy Tribute Concert (actually never stood up either), is not seen in public or photos (Facebook, Instagram, etc.) since, his daughter (Carnie) pretty much states that her father's days of performing are over - and nothing comes from Brian's camp. No, I don't NEED a formal announcement, but it would be nice to keep his many fans up to date, like he/they did whenever he had a product/service to sell. And, no, it's not necessary to make an official announcement when you retire from recording or performing...but many do.

It just appeared that Cowsill didn't want to get into it any further than that. Another reason would be that while Mike/"The Beach Boys" (officially) let him go, he felt that Stamos (unofficially) was the driving force. That it was his idea, his influence, his having Mike's ear. (Obviously, I'm speculating, but Cowsill said what he said.) I think that's more likely than Mike officially turning over such managerial decision-making to Stamos (or anyone else). On the Brian front, unless he’s decided that he has no plans to ever perform or release music again (which I highly doubt Brian will ever feel comfortable deciding), then there’s nothing to announce. The edit to my last post addresses much of this. Clearly Brian is not in good health. Perhaps Brian and his family don't think they need to publicize it further or they are unsure how or when to.

Just making conversation, and going a little off-topic, but this Stamos reference has me intrigued. We have periodically discussed on this board what will happen to the Beach Boys' name and band and future once Mike, Brian, Al, Bruce, and David...move on. Who will take it over? What will it look like? We've thrown out names like Jeff Foskett (before his medical issues), maybe Scott Totten, maybe Darian Sahanaja and other Brian Wilson band members, and even the possibility of a "Family Of The Beach Boys" conglomeration. However, I don't think John Stamos' name has ever been mentioned as someone who might be interested in managing the live production - if there is any.
Thinking out loud...Stamos is no spring chicken either (he'll be 60 in August), and maybe his acting roles are drying up a bit. As a fan and friend of The Beach Boys for almost 40 years, we know John is passionate about the band's music and legacy. The timing for such an advisory or manager role might be right. Jerry Schilling is 81 years old. I'm assuming Brian and Al aren't as enthusiastic about Stamos' contributions as Mike and Bruce are, and I don't know if they would oppose such a move. Stamos does have that unfortunate black mark as the Executive Producer of the An American Family miniseries. I'll be tuned in to see if this story (John Cowsill's quote) has legs.

If this true about Cowsill being fired...well, that pisses me off. Maybe Scott, too? Purely guessing: the transition is underway for a Love-less, Johnston-less Beach Boys to carry on in the near future.

I see no signs of his retiring. He still has his health and enthusiasm. Every once in a while Mike makes that Tony Bennett analogy about being in his 90s and still performing, and that The Beach Boys were following in his footsteps. I think Mike has years of performing still left in him.
Now, Bruce is another question. Yes, he has a very easy "job", and I would imagine he's still happy doing it. But, Bruce is not a Mike Love (who is? ), and he has had some health issues. I don't know, but I would also expect Bruce to hang in there for a couple more years.

Strange.
Why, pray tell, would replacing the popular longtime drummer be any boost whatsoever? Now, if Cowsill weren't up to par, that would be one thing, but he's been fantastic as a drummer and singer. They got younger, OK ... I don't think the Beach Boys are going to be teen favorites again all of a sudden because they added a new, younger-but-not-young local gigging-and-church musician. (And that's no offense to any of those categories of musician.) But you're intentionally replacing John Cowsill with him?
I wonder whether finances played into that decision.
As for them going on without any Beach Boys, I am totally fine with that in theory. But I don't see it happening until Mike cannot tour anymore, and for now, he still can. And I don't see why replacing Totten and Cowsill--whether or not on Stamos's advice--would be any indicator that it's coming.

At 80, my dad seemed full of life, healthy, I thought he was gonna make it to 100. The decline happened very suddenly. So each summer Mike is on tour, I look at it possibly being his last. But I think it would be pretty cool to have a 99 year old "beach boy" singing Be True to Your School (or nursing home), Little Deuce Walker, God Only Knows How Much Longer I Can Do This, and of course the gender specific Surfer Granny. When I see Mike and Bruce on screen, Mike looks pretty much the same as he always has. Bruce is really showing his age these days.

The Beach Boys channel is returning to SiriusXM for the next month. This announcement also includes: - Mention of a special to be run on the channel in which indie pop band AJR pick their favorites and talk about the band. (I admit, I have never heard of AJR.) - A poll in which you can pick up to 25 Beach Boys songs to go toward the channel's eventual Top 60. blog.siriusxm.com/beach-boys-channel-2023/

By the way, I think the aforementioned poll is buggy: while it says you can vote for up to 25 songs, it stopped allowing me to select songs at 20. As if I weren't stressed enough trying for 25!
