With a handful of new members joining in the past month or so, I thought it might be a nice opportunity to reintroduce the board to people, just to give an overview of what we're about. I'm taking it upon myself to do this, so this is just my opinion--others can chime in if or as they see fit to supplement, reinforce, or correct this as they see fit.
I may link to this on occasion (if I remember) in the future as new groups of people come aboard.
1. We are glad you're here.
This is by no means an exclusivist sort of board. We're not pretending to be important, we're not elitist: we're just fans of music in general, and (obviously, hence the board) the Beach Boys in particular. Some of us are more obsessive about rare releases and collectibles, others about the radio hits, others about certain band members, etc. I think we range in age from 20s to 70s; we have people who were fans from the beginning to brand-new fans. There is no "right way" to be a fan. It isn't better (or worse) to pick some unreleased Dennis Wilson outtake as your favorite song than it is to pick "Kokomo." You're welcome regardless.
2. We want to hear from you.
Don't be shy. As long as you've joined, you may as well chime in! You don't need to contribute doctoral dissertations on Brian's use of Moogs in 1972 or some original research on the touring band's third keyboardists throughout the '70s: there are plenty of opportunities to vote in the various best/worst threads, or share your stories, etc. The more voices on the board, the more interesting the board.
3. Say whatever you like ... but be respectful when others do the same.
I think I speak for all when I say we pride ourselves here on being able to disagree respectfully, which can be a challenge online. There is no unanimity of opinions here, either on the Beach Boys, music generally, or "off-topic" topics. But so far, we've managed throughout the years to discuss things pretty calmly--even politics! (Knock on wood.) We encourage your honest and real participation in any threads whether you mostly agree, mostly disagree, or are somewhere in-between.
That's it (and maybe more than enough). Anyway, I'll just close by saying again, welcome, and we hope to hear from you often!
