The Beach Boys try to see how many surfing references they can make on one album while extending a middle finger to The Four Seasons.

SG is my favourite BB album after SU and PS. It's also their most joyous album (with ASL in hot pursuit). The whole gang's here: the "classic five" plus David, Maureen and the Crew. Brian is in control and the future looks (and is) bright. What more could a sane person wish for?

While thinking about the "genius" thread, this album came to mind and i felt like I had to mention something about it--especially since I apparently failed to do so previously.
I don't think they had a good album before it, much less a great one, but I think this is a great album. It's got a handful of throw-aways, but it also has what I'd consider six really great songs: Surfer Girl, Catch a Wave, The Surfer Moon, Little Deuce Coupe, In My Room, and Hawaii. There are professional musicians whose best six songs don't match these six, and these are all on one album and in many cases were bested time and again over the subsequent few years.
The production wasn't consistently great yet, and as I mentioned there are some clunkers. But this is a really good one.

I do think Surfer Girl is the first great Boys album, and I think it doesn't get duscussed nearly enough.
