Funny you posted, as I had just today seen a little clip of Robert Fripp doing some guitar exercises and thought of this documentary! I remembered it had been announced and planned to check in on where it stood. Glad to hear it's en route!

I am listening to The Court of The Crimson King at the fire pit tonight on my Harmon Kardon Onyx Speaker. Damn - I’m still blown away by this album today as much as I was when I first heard it in 1985 thanks to my musician boyfriend at the time - Tony Rutherford - who attended the Berklee School of Music in Boston. What a work of art it is. Just perfection.

I looked up Anthony to see if he had any success in music and found out that he passed away in 2016 of renal cancer. He ended up becoming a flight instructor at the Naval Academy and then moved to Maui, where he passed. He never married. I hope I didn’t scar him for life. I was a very bad girlfriend. He was such a great guy - despite the fact he came from money. We loved to have the rule of the mansion in Mission Hills when his dad was away. There was never enough toilet paper though. His dad had the bathrooms flown in from France, complete with bidets, so I guess he didn’t think you needed toilet paper?
His dad did go to see the GF Dead concert I went with Tony to see. Mid 80’s so Jerry was still around. I sort of thought his otherwise stodgy dad was pretty cool for doing that. I guarantee Tony and I had more fun though!

Also - Tony was the reason I started playing the guitar. The guitarist in his band had a beautiful Les Paul and it mesmerized me and his guitarist started giving me lessons for free. I bought a cheap used Fender Squier Stratocaster (Japan Made though) and a Roland Spirit 10A amp (The “original cube”) and actually learned to play pretty well with lots of practice.
Then Tony moved to Boston for school, where I did visit him once. I am still thankful to this day for his inspiration on my musical journey. That is one of the reasons I was so excited about the King Crimson Documentary. I discovered King Crimson at the same time I began my own musical journey. Yes, I played Cello and Piano since I was in fourth grade, but guitar was such a wonderful, new challenge. Guitar is hard to learn. The Cello doesn’t have any frets, but the fingering is easier because the instrument is upright.

I really would loved to have found a video of Greg Lake singing “In The Court of The Crimson King” or “Epitath” with King Crimson, but I can’t find any. He has solo videos of the songs from much later, but they are not good. The songs need the musicianship of the band to keep their magic. My favorite era of King Crimson.

Oh what the heck - I still love Greg Lake’s voice. Still - you just know how special the musicians of King Crimson were after listening to this. Just not even on the same planet. Sorry to highjack the board. My love of The Beach Boys has been trumped by King Crimson currently. So sad that my favorite vocalists have passed, but this band was frickin amazing.

King Crimson has a special place in my heart, because the person who introduced me to the band, also brought about my interest in playing the guitar. Such a different instrument from the piano and the cello. The electronic aspect was very interesting. I started on an electric guitar, but quickly realized I needed an acoustic to work on arpeggios. It was harder to hear the individual tones on an electric guitar. I actually still prefer to write music on an acoustic guitar. I know Kapitan is a Fripp fan. Fripp’s You Tube videos are intense, but he is so entertaining. Also, I have to say, that finding out just today that Tony passed away six years ago, was a pretty big shock to the senses. Just really got to me. I was so excited about purchasing the DVD /CD set, then wow, things went South quickly.

Life is full of shit, to quote Monty Python, but thankfully not all the time. Yes, Fripp is an interesting fellow. I remember him telling the morons bellowing for "Schizoid Man" during the hushed opening minutes of "Larks' Tongues" in '73 that the music was about dynamics and if they couldn't appreciate that they should go to the pub across the road. Even more ludicrously, people were calling for "Schizoid Man" at a Fripp solo concert my brother attended years ago. He even managed to briefly engage the great man in conversation. When asked, Fripp himself was fairly laconic about it. My favourite RF quote? "Me and a book is a party. Me and a book and a cup of coffee is an orgy."
