It's a good question, but for fun I'll turn it inside-out a bit.
What do we know about the hobbies of Jeff Beck, Cyndi Lauper, Julio Iglesias, or Barbra Streisand? As a rule, people don't know other people's private lives, and this is true of celebrities unless a) the paparazzi exposes something personal, or b) (often related to a) the celebrities want us to know something. And when they want us to know something, it's often to sell something or do reputational repair. (If some celebrity loves writing poetry, you're unlikely to find out unless he is selling a book of poetry.)
And what are OUR hobbies? People on this board? Putzing around in the yard or garden ... watching TV or movies ... hanging out with family and friends ... playing instruments or listening to music ... watching or playing sports ... going out to eat.
Well, Brian and Mike are fond of sports. Brian likes going out to eat. Al has a hobby farm. Dennis used to like hot rods, apparently. They all liked music. My guess is their other hobbies weren't or aren't that different than ours, except they have the money to do it on whatever level they want(ed), and don't have to spend 8-10 hours a day going to some shitty job. (Though sometimes they'd have to spend weeks at a time at a job that may or may not be shitty, depending on the specifics of each moment and one's personal taste.)

Sheriff, Carl was an aviation buff. Not surprising, since there was a pilot in the family and the Wilsons grew up in an aerospace town.

Gee, I never thought of it that way. I'm like The Beach Boys!

Carl loved food, according to his sons and Billy Hinsche. I think this was pretty obvious at various times in his life. In fact, it's really amazing how much he had slimmed down by the time of his solo tours. Do any of these guys like messing around with old cars? Any voracious readers in the bunch?

Do any of these guys like messing around with old cars? Yep: Dennis used to like hot rods, apparently. Here is a little story that touches on the band and their relationships to cars (in and outside of song).

I'm surprised there weren't any votes for 1998. That seems like an easy/painless choice. After Carl's death, what are fans really holding on to? Didn't the group essentially break-up anyway? When I think about it, we potentially could have still gotten most/all...or possibly more...of the good, and avoided much...or at least some...of the bad.

As far as I am concerned, 1998 is when they did break up -- and again in 2012.
(I clicked "other" and explained my choice early in the thread.)

I said never, simply because there is still a Beach Boys band touring the US every year; and after resisting for 2 decades, I finally broke down and saw them, enjoyed the show...and they're still going, so yeah, keep it going. Back in 1998, though, I thought the band was done. I thought the name would be retired, and that would be the end of it. But then we got 2...3...how many different touring groups? Mike and Bruce touring as the Beach Boys, playing all the old hits; Al touring under various names, but again, singing all the Beach Boys hits; and Brian touring under his own name, and singing all the Beach Boys hits. So the truth is, call them what you want, but the Beach Boys will never go away, until mortality takes them away. So again, I say never. And in a better world, they would be singing these songs together instead of separately.

It just occurred to me that 1988 would have been fitting. They could have gone out on top with a Hall of Fame induction and #1 single.

It's not our choice to make. I don't believe in asking artists to quit doing what they love. I also think that the concept of "going out on top" is mostly bogus, and not a desirable outcome for most.
