Dan Bongino, Tucker Carlson, and Don Lemon...all out in one week. Burn it all down, that's what I say to the celebrity news-o-tainment industry. Sadly they will each likely just presumably go on to their own independent platforms or other alternative platforms and do just fine financially and get way more eyeballs than cable news gets. Both print and cable news (and network television in general) are pretty much a joke, with fewer eyeballs/ears than many modestly popular podcasts and substack accounts. The sad part is, those are just celebrity-driven, too.

A new season of Beavis & Butt-head is coming/out. The first episode is on YouTube. Watched the first two episodes over the weekend. Very funny stuff. I can't wait to see what Mike Judge does with the King of the Hill revival.

I was wondering about that. Chris Cuomo was fired from a highly-rated and popular show on CNN. He ended up buried on the NewsNation/Nexstar Media Group network where his viewership and ratings are tanking - not that I care; I don't like him. But, I am curious where Carlson and Lemon will end up. I can't see their landing spot competing with a Fox or CNN but we'll see.

Carlson is the most watched TV news opinion host at 3+ million per show. For comparison, Joe Rogan's average podcast viewership is 11 million. Ben Shapiro, through his Daily Wire, has 5.5 million subscribers. Megyn Kelly's podcast gets over a million views a show.
CNN averages something like half a million viewers. For comparison, even Krystal Ball and Saager Enjeti's daily news podcast gets about a million views a show, too.
Corporate mainstream media is basically dead and dying. (And it deserves it.) It's a good place to have a reputation, but nobody actually watches/reads it, relatively speaking. The celeb types (like Carlson) will get more eyeballs on their own, assuming they are competently produced. Going to a legacy outlet would a terrible idea. It wouldn't surprise me if Lemon does that, though.

Any Hulu subscribers here? And if so, is it just me, or are there WAY more ads lately!? I've been rewatching the Zach Galifinakis series (and I'd say Louie Anderson series: he really stole the show, in my opinion) Baskets. And in each half-hour episode, I swear there are at least three if not more commercial breaks within each episode, not including the one that comes before each episode.
One of the big perks of streaming services was fewer or no commercials. Apparently once people started cutting the cord from cable, they figured they could pull the ol' switcheroo and reintroduce them anyway. It's driving me crazy. And I've heard Netflix is considering or has decided on adding ads, too, maybe with a tiered version where you can pay more to keep avoiding them.
I totally understand nothing is free. The only reason network TV is "free" (though decreasingly so) is that we are the product the networks sell to advertisers. I understand. But when these platforms began with higher costs, but fewer or no commercials, I thought that was the deal we'd made! Now we pay for it AND get the commercials...
And seriously, I hate commercials. I really do. Especially when it's the same half-dozen over and over, every commercial break.

I noticed this with Paramount + when we were watching the new Beavis and Buttheads last weekend. Previously, I think each break had 1-2 ads, now its 5-6.

For those who watch a lot of scripted television, get ready for disappointment: the Writers Guild of America is going on strike today, largely over payments for streaming (which are lower than for broadcast).
First to feel the pain will be (especially late-night) talk shows, which produce scripts daily. Soap operas will soon follow. And next will be next season's shows, which would be going into production now. Networks have apparently been hording scripts and planning more reality shows to help get them through it. (More reality shows? Is it possible? Three of every four ads I see are for stupid reality shows, game shows, competition shows, etc.)

(Luckily for me, I don't think I've been a regular viewer of any of them since the late '90s!)

Is anyone a The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel fan? The new season (S5, 3 episodes so far) were released Friday. There are six more episodes to be released between now and late May. OK, so they're two-thirds of the way through this, the final season, and ... I am not enjoying it much at all. It has its moments, yes, but to me, the show lost its momentum.

ktla.com/entertainment/jenna-ortega-to-star-in-beetlejuice-2-alongside-michael-keaton-and-winona-ryder/It's been rumored for years, but a sequel to the 1988 horror comedy Beetlejuice is now official, with a release set for September 2024. Tim Burton, Michael Keaton, Winona Ryder, and Danny Elfman are set to return with Jenna Ortega being added to the cast. Of course, like any legacy sequel or remake, the reaction has been divisive. But, one talking point I can't wrap my head around is "This is going to ruin the original." How? I don't get this mentality. How would a late sequel ruin one's enjoyment of the original? The original 1954 Godzilla movie is pretty highly regarded. They've made something in the range of 30 movies since, of varying quality. The original is still highly regarded. I think if a later sequel affects your enjoyment of a beloved movie, that's a "you problem." It's not like Summer in Paradise is hampering anyone's enjoyment of Pet Sounds.

Over the weekend, my wife and I got halfway through the first season of Disney+'s Muppets Mayhem. This is a show dedicated to the house band of The Muppet Theater - Dr. Teeth and the Electric Mayhem.
Ever since the really well done 2011 Muppets reboot movie, I don't think Disney has managed the brand very well. The 2014 follow up Muppets Most Wanted was disappointing. The 2015 Office-style Muppets TV show was really funny, but I don't think it was given enough of a chance on ABC. And, for some reason, audiences and critics didn't like the adult oriented humor (I guess they never saw the original TV show or the first few movies). There was a lackluster CGI reboot of Muppet Babies, another attempt at a sketch show called Muppets Now, and a standalone Halloween special called The Muppets at the Haunted Mansion, all three of which were pretty underwhelming.
So, I really didn't have any expectations for a show devoted to the Electric Mayhem, but it's actually been surprisingly good.

Is/was anyone here a fan of "Succession"? It had its finale the other day, and I have to be honest, I was shocked how much coverage that got. It was like the last episode of "Seinfeld" or "Game of Thrones" or something.
I had it recommended to me by a friend around the end of the first season, and I watched that. I think I even watched the very beginning of the second season. But then, honestly, I just didn't care. I didn't like any of the characters, and so I didn't care about the plot (and plot twists), either. So that's all I saw: I just quit very early on in Season 2. Now I was almost shocked to hear, oh yeah, that was still going on (and is ending). Who did what, how did it shake out ... I realized I still just don't care.
Sometimes I wish I were on board with more of these cultural phenomena. I get the appeal of watching "the" show of the moment. But it seems that more often than not, I end up the odd duck who doesn't watch. (Though sometimes I then find myself digging in after the fact, as was true with "Game of Thrones" and "Arrested Development".)

The last time I watched a show that was considered "the" show of the moment was probably The Walking Dead. Although I bailed on it around Season 9 (probably at least two seasons too late), so by the time the finale aired, I'd already checked out.
Bailing on a long running show was out of character for me. I'll typically stick with a show for better or for worse. Case in point, I still watch The Simpsons. But, The Walking Dead was becoming such a chore that I got zero entertainment value out of it.

Here's a rarity: a new movie I want to see! (Actually this would make two, as I also want to see the new Wes Anderson movie.) Dreamin' Wild is based on the true story of brothers who released an album in 1979 to no reaction at all, but which saw new light with a 2012 release. It stars Casey Affleck, Zooey Deschanel, Beau Bridges, among others.
And hey, to connect it with this board, in addition to Deschanel, the trailer includes a name-check of B Wilson and part of a review of the album that twists the famous "teenage symphony to God" line. It's also directed by Bill Pohlad, who directed Love & Mercy.
