KDS, I need to know whether you watched the Motely Crue Netflix movie and what you thought.
NYT tore it apart, but I suspect they’re not target market...

I've yet to watch it, but from everything I've read about it, it seems like fans of the band are enjoying it, but it's not likely to convert any non fans.

I watched about half an hour of it last night. It’s not very good. I’d say it seems like it was made for kids if not for the sex, drugs, etc. so...made for kids to sneakily watch when their parents aren’t around?
That said, I guess it’s the cinematic equivalent of Motley: big dumb loud fun.

That's what I really enjoyed about the movie Rock Star, and boy, did that come out at a weird time. 2001. Rap metal was all the rage. Guitar solos were still considered sinful in hard rock. But, when I saw it, it was like a breath of fresh air, considering the utter crap that was coming out of the metal / hard rock scene at the time. But, it included at least one Crue song on the soundtrack.

I'm far from a movie buff, but I enjoy catching a movie at night on a cable TV station. Lately I've been seeing a lot of movies starring Michael Douglas and I'm really enjoying them. Are there any Michael Douglas fans out there? These are 5 I really like:
1. Fatal Attraction 2. A Perfect Murder 3. Basic Instinct 4. Wall Street 5. Falling Down
Oh, and The American President is a good one, too.

The new Twilight Zone became available today. You have to subscribe to CBS all access, but the first episode was put on youtube:
This episode was really interesting and there was at least one easter egg from the original series. Subsequent episodes have received mixed reviews.

The Godfather I and II were on TV Monday night so I watched them...again. I think I prefer The Godfather I over II. Marlon Brando's performance is just so good; he becomes the character he's playing. Brando is the difference for me. Part II is great, too, but I don't like those flashbacks to young Vito's life played by Robert DeNiro. It's almost filler.
Anybody have a preference? I or II.

I haven't seen either one since ... college? So just about 20 years! I really ought to re-watch. I seem to remember liking II better, but I won't swear to it after all these years (or trust younger me's judgment, for that matter).

This qualifies as an unpopular opinion, but I don't care for The Godfather. Or mob movies in general. It's just never been my cup of tea. Back when Family Guy was still funny, Peter got into a conversation with his family where he admitted he didn't like The Godfather. It's one of my all time favorite Family Guy moments because I feel like I had the same exact conversion with people when I'd say I didn't care for the movie.

I relate to that. I had a fling with them around my aforementioned college years, probably spurred by then-current additions to the genre (Casino, Sleepers to some extent). But overall I’m not into them.
Part of it, I think, is the romanticized image of criminality they present. It seemed cool to 20-year-old me, I suppose, but frustrates me now.

In regard to the Godfather series, I can see how it wouldn't be everybody's cup of tea. It is slow-paced; I think the emphasis is more on the story/plot and the artistic part of film making. You really have to hang in there to enjoy it if that makes sense. I don't think that is necessarily true with most "mob movies", though. Don't most of the others rely more on action and consistent violence (not that The Godfather doesn't have violence; it's just not as prevalent)? I'm just comparing a movie like Goodfellas to The Godfather, and Scorsese took the violence/killing to another level.

I think some mob movies rely more on action than storytelling, but for a reason that I can never really verbalize, the whole mob thing holds zero appeal to me. I like good storytelling or slower paced movies, and I also like some violent action movies, so I can't really say why either type of film with a mob tie doesn't move me. However, I do like comedies involving the mob, the Analyze This / That franchise in particular. Go figure.

Last night I watched the movie, Cape Fear, with Nick Nolte and Robert DeNiro. I like the original version with Gregory Peck and Robert Mitchum, but I think I prefer this one. DeNiro's performance might be a little over-the-top, but it does get to you, especially the last half hour of the movie. Anybody else a fan of the movie?
My 5 Favorite Robert DeNiro performances:
1. Goodfellas 2. Taxi Driver 3. Casino 4. Raging Bull 5. Cape Fear
Dark Horse: Jackie Brown
