Last night I listened to about a half-dozen or so of these songs again in headphones (which really is how anything from the Desper era always suits me best) and felt I had to get this official thread up just to say: goddamn, it's fun.
Of course we have this massive thread on the topic already, but not in the albums thread:
Specifically, it was "Break Away" (1969 original single mix) that was kicking my ass last night. The guitar(s?) in the right channel strumming away during the verses reminded me of how banjos used to be used in jazz, almost more percussion than tonal instruments. I think it's at least an acoustic, but maybe also an electric? I kept thinking it was a miracle, and a crime, that the song wasn't a hit. I adore it.

The original mix of Break Away has always sounded great to me, and I was glad to see it included in this set. So what happened with Celebrate the News? Maybe others feel differently, but I think this new mix is a total train wreck! What's with all the reverb? It dulls down all the spontaneity of the vocals and makes the song sound a little lounge-y to me. And then as the song is starting to build up....it ends about a half minute early. Not a fan! I'll stick with my 2fer mix.

Break Away is in my top 10 Beach Boys songs, so I was glad it was kept intact.

So glad this fucking album finally came out. From here on out, this is the set I will play to non-believers; I'll SMiLe and thank God for Feel, Feel, Feel Flows.

What a time to be a Beach Boys fan! 11 years ago we got the SMiLE Sessions, then we got Sunshine Tomorrow, then Wake the World et al, and now the crowning glory of the Feel Flows Box! A little over a decade ago I dreamed of all this, but never got my hopes up.
With FF on my shelf, I feel like my classic BBs collection is complete.

I've always been fascinated with (and really liked) the phased quality to some of the vocals--often Brian's vocals--in the Sunflower era. There is a certain sharpness that I really like. For example, "Awake," when Brian goes into his falsetto.
joshilynhoisington (or anyone, frankly), I wonder if you'd care to guess as to how intentional that was? Is it a matter of a coincidence of Brian's multitracked voice (like Freddie Mercury's) being so similar as to sound like it was being run through a phaser, or a more intentional way of recording or EQing?
