I've been thoroughly enjoying this album over the past few days. The band is great. I love the backing vocals. (Quite possibly more than I would the then-current Beach Boys!) Brian's lead vocals are among the best of his solo career. The arrangements are so much fun, and fitting. And I think the material really suits Brian. It's a nice union. The songwriting, the melodies, are strong, and in some instances very Brian-like, IMO. (For instance, I'm not overly familiar with some of the songs, so I wouldn't have been surprised to learn he had actually written them.) Some of lyrics also seem to fit his personality perfectly. Just a nice, pleasant, fun album! And, expertly executed. This isn't second fiddle to Gershwin for me. (And in some ways actually feels less of a genre exercise - perhaps because it's more rockin'.) I think they're fine companion albums. And, personally, I think I'll give the slight edge to Disney. For further discussion: Album of the Week #33: In The Key Of Disney

As much as I do understand--and even agree with to a degree--that take on it, I went back to the AotW thread on it and have to stand behind my stance from that time. It's well done, it's professional (a word I think I used 45 times or so in that thread!), but I don't find it very appealing.
Probably most of that is just that I don't like a bunch of those songs.
Also: how did we miss that one in this thread? I haven't paid attention to this section much, but thought we had everything listed. Perhaps a scan is in order.

This is what I posted in that AOTW thread
I can't really go any higher than 5. This is a contractually obligated album, and it sounds like one at times. It might have been a label / Disney decision, but I think they skewed too new for their choices of Disney songs (even though Colors of the Wind happens to be a highlight). I think had they attempted to give the Brian Wilson treatment to more songs from the older Disney classics, it could have been a fun album.
I stand by this. I'm not really a big Disney guy, so the songs themselves don't do much for me. But, they definitely should've gone more of the classic route rather than hearing another aging rock legend sing Can You Feel the Love Tonight.

Pretty sure I've never successfully listened to this entire album. Just could never get into it. The only song on here that's not bad is "When You Wish Upon a Star".

I do think that's the best of the bunch, though I think "Baby Mine," "Stay Awake," and "Heigh Ho/Whistle While You Work" were all OK, too. None of the songs is great, though. The newer songs--those from the Toy Story movies, Little Mermaid, Pocahontas, Lion King--especially just don't appeal to me to begin with, so it didn't much matter what they did with them.

The Gershwin album was alright, but they've really gotten away from what a Brian Wilson album should be - a batch of new (at least to us) songs by the master. Absolutely unessential.
