Yesterday I saw a feature-and-interview about the new Australian rock band Romero. (Guess which member the interview was with...) I have to say, I was very pleasantly surprised when I gave the music a try.
It's very much in the vein of classic rock, somewhere in the power pop meets straight-ahead rock range, but it's not overtly imitation the way some such bands (ahem, Greta Van Fleet) can be. Traditional rock instrumentation, big riffs, even guitar solos, but plenty of melody from a singer who can really sing. I actually downloaded the album.

Not too bad.
I do have to wonder how frontwomen in rock fell when it's time to shoot a video. Her male bandmates can just dress all schlubby. Meanwhile, she's dressed to kill in heels, and a little dress with make up. (Not that I'm complaining, just an observation).

Meanwhile, she's dressed to kill in heels, and a little dress with make up. (Not that I'm complaining, just an observation). Yeah, I was thinking that too. Though I haven't seen enough of them to know whether that was mostly for that video. The other one, she isn't so glammed up. And I think it's part of the "story" of the video, with the one fan there and her performing as if in front of a crowd. I will see if I can find some live clips.
Definitely a fine line, really for everyone but especially women, when it comes to marketing their sex appeal. Overdo it and it detracts from your talent. But you want to be noticed, and sexuality has been a part of rock and roll as long as rock and roll has existed. (Not just women, either: early Elvis Presley, Robert Plant, Prince, George Michael ... plenty of men have promoted their sexuality too. But absolutely, it seems women are expected to do so much more often.)

Right, and it's not just in music either, but all forms of entertainment.
I did notice she's a little more casual in the second video.

Friday saw the release of Father John Misty's Chloe and the Next 20th Century. I've posted a couple of the pre-album release singles in this thread, but just wanted to say that I bought and listened to the album and really think it's an impressive album.
It is heavily orchestrated, and comes across like something between early '70s Harry Nilsson (including A Touch of Schmilsson in the Night as well as Nilsson Schmilsson), Jimmy Webb/Glen Campbell, and the Left Banke, but with no shortage of the pre-rock, Tin Pan Alley influences of especially the former, either.
The orchestration is really nice, not just simple strings or horns added atop a mix, but real arrangements that wholly comprise the instrumentation. (Drew Erickson arranged and Jonathan Wilson produced.)
It's also lyrically interesting, funny.

Spiritualized--whom I think jk has mentioned liking?--has a new album being released Friday. This review in Music Ohm drops references including: Brian Wilson, the Rolling Stones, Pachelbel, Phil Spector, Lou Reed, The Art Ensemble of Chicago, Kurt Vonnegut, the Beach Boys, Patsy Cline, the Velvet Underground, and Arvo Part.
That's quite a spectrum...

Well remembered, sir. And indeed, a wide range of influences. Regrettably perhaps, Jason Pierce and co are in my one-album-per-artist category, that album being the extraordinary LAGWAFIS. Somebody at Smiley (Hypehat?) did their best to get me to listen to other Spiritualized albums but I dug my heels in -- which, with all due respect, is what I'm doing now.

Personally I've always felt like a little Spiritualized goes a long way. I'll probably give the new album a listen, but I'm not expecting I'll buy it or give it a lot of listens. But we'll see! Maybe that Cline-Part-Pachelbel-Reed-Wilson-Etc combo will hit the spot!

Wilco announced the release of a new album, Cruel Country, scheduled for a May release. It is a country album, and reportedly was recorded of live takes. (They did that with the great 00s album Sky Blue Sky, too, which is one of my favorites of theirs.) Here is the lead single:

88-year-old Willie Nelson announced a new album coming April 29, his 89th birthday. The first single from A Beautiful Time is out now (below), written by Rodney Crowell and Chris Stapleton, and there are a couple of covers (the Beatles' "With a Little Help From My Friends" and Leonard Cohen's "Tower of Song"), but the rest of the songs are Nelson originals.
The man just keeps working.
And, here is Willie's cover of "With A Little Help From My Friends":

Diana Ross is out with a new song featuring... Tame Impala. Not a collaboration I was expecting, but not a bad song. It's the lead single from the upcoming Minions: The Rise of Gru soundtrack.

I like it! It reminds me of the stuff from Mark Ronson's 2015 album Uptown Special (which of course had contributions from Tame Impala's Kevin Parker as well as some great '70s icons like Stevie Wonder and a certain amount of disco and funk).

Speaking of new music, I know we don't have many (any?) real rap fans around here, but on the off chance: anybody listened to the new Kendrick Lamar album, and if so, any thoughts to share yet?

I listened to a couple of the singles and I feel the same way I feel about his other stuff in that I'm indifferent. I'd say I'll give the whole thing a listen, but at 73 minutes I'd probably be lying lol.
