It's hard to believe that we're just over two weeks from 2022. Here's a short list of prospective new releases for 2022 from Ultimate Classic Rock. ultimateclassicrock.com/2022-new-music-releases/I can't say I'm overly intrigued by many (but of course this list is far from definitive as we sit on December 15). Scorpions have a new one coming out, but I haven't really been a fan of their more cent albums. Possible new material from Bad Company and Extreme sound interesting.

A few things there are somewhat interesting. I've already preordered the Elvis Costello album. Kinks reunion--I hadn't realized that. Had Sheriff John Stone? I ask because he just mentioned it!
The Extreme album could be interesting. Obviously you know I think those guys are really talented. It's a matter of whether they try to recapture past glory and sounds--and referring to it as Pornograffiti 2.0 isn't promising in that respect--or do something fresh. (Though we've talked about it a thousand times: if "do something fresh" means hop on a bandwagon, that's not interesting either.)
GnR is the glaring disappointment, or would be if it weren't GnR, and thus expected. A year-late Illusion box that includes live material but apparently no unreleased tracks? (None mentioned anyway.) If that's the case, that's underwhelming. And their new EP is lame, too, with nothing really new there either.

Yeah, I'm equally disappointed by the GNR EP.
The previous Extreme comeback album - Saudades de Rock - released in 2008 was pretty good. I feel like it was a nice balance of classic sounding Extreme without pastiche.

Father John Misty (Josh Tillman) announced his next album, Chloe and the Next 20th Century, will be released April 8. He also released the first song and video, "Funny Girl." It is a fully orchestrated musical theater/soft jazz sort of song.

The Weekend is coming out with a new album tomorrow called dawn FM. I've generally liked his work, so I'm looking forward to it. From what I understand, it supposed to feel like you're listening to the radio in the 80s. Not sure what exactly that means other than the songs are going to be more 80s based stuff that he's done recently.

I wouldn't mind if he goes that route!

Today's releases include the lost 2000-01 David Bowie album Toy, which was previously released in November '21 as part of his '90s catalogue box set but now gets a standalone release. It was recorded in 2000 and comprises mostly songs he had written from 1964-71.
I've just started listening, and it's really enjoyable. I'm not a superfan, but I am a modest Bowie fan. Here's one I am liking:

Another new one is "You Will Never Work in Television Again" (a great title that reminds me of Mitch Mitchell recounting the story of Hendrix on Lulu breaking into "Sunshine of Your Love") by The Smile, the side project of Radiohead's Thom Yorke and Jonny Greenwood plus drummer Tom Skinner.
It's aggressive, downright punky.

Both very enjoyable. That Bowie track is interesting, I'll have to read up on it.

What do you think of The Brucend (tm) track, "Here We Go ... Again"? (Or the rest of the Weeknd album, if you've listened yet?)

What do you think of The Brucend (tm) track, "Here We Go ... Again"? (Or the rest of the Weeknd album, if you've listened yet?) I liked it enough to add to my current favorites playlist. I could do without the rap verse, but it's not the worst thing in the world. Between driving to work and work itself, I haven't been able to give the full album a close listen, but I did listen to it all. Some of the tracks feel a little too samey, but again, maybe sitting down this weekend I'll change my mind. There certainly wasn't anything I disliked with Bruce's track, Sacrifice, Out of Time, and Less Than Zero being highlights for me. I'd give it a 7/10 with maybe room to go up to an 8. The radio and talk stuff will probably get old after a while, not that I'll be listening to it a ton.

Possible new material from Bad Company and Extreme sound interesting. I'm watching a somewhat epic (and somewhat drunken) interview with Nuno Bettencourt from fall '21, which I'll share later and elsewhere for some of its really interesting content. But related to this, he says the guys in the band have taken to calling the upcoming album Portugese Democracy. I found that very funny.
(Nuno is Portugese. Obviously a reference to the long-gestating GnR album.)

Hopefully Gary doesn't replace Nuno with Buckethead and make us wait a decade plus.

Today a pair of albums I'm interested in were released: Elvis Costello's The Boy Named If and Earl Sweatshirt's Sick!
I'm glad the holiday season is over in that respect: new releases are finally going to start flowing again. They usually dry up from December through early January.
