I had to look up Shirley Jones! I see she acted and sang in her film versions of Oklahoma! and Carousel. I never saw either, but back in the '50s the radio often played the wonderful songs Rodgers and Hammerstein wrote for them... And, Shirley Jones won an Academy Award in 1960 for Best Supporting Actress in Elmer Gantry. That's why it was such a surprise when she took the role of Shirley Partridge, the mother and leader of a family band in the 1970-74 musical sitcom, The Partridge Family. The show was based on another musical family, The Cowsills. Shirley appeared in the TV show with her stepson, David Cassidy, and she also sang on the Partridge Family records.

Happy 73rd Birthday to Henry Gross! Henry opened for The Beach Boys in the mid-1970s and became friends with Carl Wilson, who sang on Henry's album, Plug Me Into Something. Henry had a Top Ten hit in 1976 with "Shannon", inspired by Carl Wilson's dog, Shannon.

Lovely record, but songs about losing a dog are hard enough to listen to without the accompanying pictures (I lost two dogs in the past decade), hence this alternative video from the wonderful Hits Archive channel: Actually, I have good memories of this song, as it was one of the then-current hits that made some gruelling times working in the local shipyard a little less gruelling. Thank you, sir, and a very happy birthday to you.

"Shannon" was played constantly on the radio, and it sounded so good. It out-Beach Boy-ed the Beach Boys, who were about to scramble with 15 Big Ones. "Shannon" was the exact kind of song or ballad many Beach Boys' fans were hoping to hear on 15 Big Ones.

Will you still need him, will you still feed him, when he's sixty ... one? Happy 61st to Julian Lennon, one of those many kids put into an impossible situation by being the child of a legendary musician (and, what's worse, enters the music business).
Here are his two biggest (US) hits, both from his 1984 debut album, Valotte, which remains his biggest seller to date.

Steve Gadd is one of those (many) people who the casual music fan may never have heard of, but just like Wrecking Crew musicians, his list of credits is unbelievable. I remember coming across his name when I bought some Al DiMeola albums in high school. He also popped up on some Chick Corea albums I had. OK, so he's a jazz-fusion guy!? And sure enough, you'll also find him on Spyro Gyra, Joe Farrell, Return to Forever, Stanley Clarke, Larry Coryell, and other recordings of that ilk. But what about "pure" jazz? How about George Benson, the Brecker Brothers, Chet Baker, Joe Sample, Charles Mingus, Freddie Hubbard, Rashaan Roland Kirk, ... Jazz is adjacent to the American songbook, to standards, right? He played with Frank Sinatra, Barbra Streisand, Bette Midler, Barry Manilow, David Foster... Classic rock and blues? Eric Clapton, Paul Simon, Art Garfunkel, Michael McDonald, Carly Simon, David Ruffin, Jackie DeShannon, Steely Dan, the Bee Gees, Ringo Starr, Paul McCartney, Aretha Franklin, Bonnie Raitt, Ellie Greenwich, BB King, Don Felder, Peter Gabriel, Christopher Cross... Quirkier "outside" music? Carla Bley, Kate Bush... Surely it's just these old-timers, then? Well: Joss Stone, Harper Simon, Aztec Camera are some of the admittedly fewer younger artists with whom he's worked. But the amazing thing is, if you scan his discography, you'll see others and think "how did he skip that one?" There are so many big-time credits in Steve Gadd's history, it's unbelievable.
