Two birthdays today: Happy 91st Birthday to Mike Stoller! ...and Happy 85th Birthday to Neil Sedaka! Two giants of the 1950s, '60s and beyond, certainly in Neil's case. Here's a heart-warming video of Neil and Freddie Cannon alternately doing the honours on American Bandstand:

I wanted to give a special shout out to four Neil Sedaka songs. Many fans who think of Neil Sedaka remember his outstanding Brill Building work from the late 1950s/early 60s. However, Neil wrote four songs later in his career that are classics - "Solitaire" by The Carpenters, "Love Will Keep Us Together" by Captain & Tennille, "Bad Blood" by himself and an uncredited Elton John, and "Laughter In The Rain" released by himself. Great songwriting and performances! AM radio gold.

Speaking of "Laughter in the Rain" I was listening to an interesting, recent interview of Billy Joel by Howard Stern. (This story might be common knowledge to Joel fans, btw, but I've never really been one. I'm not even sure what got me listening to the aforementioned!) Joel said he had written a song, "Movin' Out (Anthony's Song)," for his upcoming album that would become The Stranger. He said usually he'd write music first, then lyrics. However, when he ran through this song to his band, they laughed at him and said, "you realize that's "Laughter in the Rain" with different words, right?" He had accidentally or subconsciously ripped off the music of "Laughter in the Rain," and so had to write new music to his existing lyrics, contrary to his typical process--and fast, as they were already in the studio recording. Here is a link to a story about it; it also includes the link to the Stern interview. americansongwriter.com/the-meaning-behind-movin-out-anthonys-song-by-billy-joel-and-why-he-had-to-do-a-last-minute-rewrite/
