What should have been a definitive document of an outstanding reunion tour is instead a very disappointing sampler of a C50 show.
In 2012, The Beach Boys were playing nearly 50 songs a night, but to document the tour, we get a slap dash 21 song DVD. I remember in the VHS era, it was quite common for bands to release truncated concert films on video tapes, but that pretty much ended at the turn of the century when DVDs became the more viable form of media. Nobody told The Beach Boys apparently. Instead of a two and a half hour concert, with loads of bonus footage, we got a film with a runtime of just under an hour with zero features.
I suspect, much like the live album, this was a contractual obligation of the reunion, and no quality control went into the product. And with a Beach Boys band on the road without Brian, Al, and David, I don't think it's likely that this will be rectified any time soon.
I've copied this from an Amazon review of the DVD:
1. You won't see the touching tributes to the late Carl and Dennis Wilson in which the band backs up video footage of each deceased member singing "God Only Knows" and "Forever" respectively.
2. You won't see a performance of "Add Some Music to Your Day" in which all five core members of the group sing around Brian's piano.
3. You won't see David Marks play the title track from "Pet Sounds" solo.
4. You won't see Brian Wilson sing "I Just Wasn't Made for These Times" and "Please Let Me Wonder."
5. You won't hear some of the classic ballads like "Surfer Girl" or "In My Room."
These were some pretty key highlights from the tour, but they're not on the DVD.
Big missed opportunity.
