This week's album is Pet Sounds Live, a live album by Brian Wilson recorded in 2002.

I'm being a little generous here, and giving this a 4. The performance is good. But, the decision to release ONLY the Pet Sounds portion of the concert instead of a full live album is one of many really boneheaded decisions by Brian's folks. The only people who would listen to this over the perfect BB studio album are the poor souls who are so triggered by the sound of Mike Love's voice that they resort to listening to later era BW live releases.

Okay, we can marvel over the instrumental abilities of Brian's band, but other than that, there's no reason for this album to exist. Would have been a nice idea for the Beach Boys to try, circa 1974, or...well, anytime. Al and Carl would have been doing the majority of the vocals that were Brian's on the original album, but that wouldn't bother me too much.

I'm not going to rate this album, because I've never listened to the CD. I have, on the other hand, watched the DVD. It's been about 15 years since I've watched it, but I remember really enjoying it. I had just discovered Pet Sounds and had anointed it my favorite album of all-time. I'm not sure what I'd think of the DVD if I were to watch it now (as I'm more critical), but at the time it did nothing to lessen my love for the music or my interest in Brian's resurgence.
I can't say I agree with the common complaint that this album has no reason to exist. It serves the same purpose as most other live albums.

... no reason to exist. It serves the same purpose as most other live albums. I agree with that sentiment ... and I stand behind my statement that it has no reason to exist, just like most other live albums!
I am actually 100% with you on the DVD side of things. I really enjoy watching a lot of these things, ditto for Smile and TLOS. For some reason, a live album just doesn't do it for me the way a live video does.

Okay, we can marvel over the instrumental abilities of Brian's band, but other than that, there's no reason for this album to exist. Not now, but there probably was back then - the continuation of milking Brian's back catalogue to try to sustain a failing solo career and trying to make Brian appear STILL relevant, even though that strategy was fraudulent, like a lot of Brian's solo career. Melinda said in an interview (I believe it was on Larry King Live) that she/Brian didn't want to just "throw things out there" every couple of years. Well, that's exactly what they did with this release. Brian butchers most of the songs, doesn't sing many of his original parts which "made" the original songs, and had practically nothing to add with his comments. Did Brian Wilson really want this thing released?
I have no idea what rating to give this release. The songs are great and the band is great. I guess that warrants a 2.

I think the existence of the audio only release would be far more justifiable if it were a full show, and not just the PS portion. With just the PS portion, it's really just an inferior version of a great album. Although.......I did spend a couple extra bucks for an import which included Meant For You and Friends. Without those songs, I'm not sure I ever would've purchased the CD.

To be fair, much of that content had just recently been released on the Roxy live album.
Which of course brings us back to the initial question, why did we need another live album, exactly?

Some of it had been on the Roxy album, but you'd still get the non hits from Pet Sounds as well as a live version of Surf's Up, and to me anyway, it would make the live album a far more logical purchase than just a 13 track PS run through.

With just the PS portion, it's really just an inferior version of a great album. I would expect there to be, every so many years, some kind of Brian Wilson "product". I have these thoughts for a Brian Wilson - Ultimate Live 2CD project. The first disc would be some opening Beach Boys' classics like "California Girls", "Do It Again", "Surfer Girl", "Darlin'", "Please Let Me Wonder", In My Room", and maybe some car songs - followed by the Pet Sounds album, ending CD1 with "Caroline, No". CD2 would open with "Our Prayer" and go right into the rest of BWPS. After the closing song, "Good Vibrations", they could wrap up CD2 with the remaining greatest hits like "Barbara Ann", "Help Me, Rhonda", "Surfin' USA", "Fun, Fun, Fun", and "Love And Mercy".
I only listed some Beach Boys' songs. Maybe they could also sprinkle in some rarer cuts like "Marcella, "This Whole World", "Sail On Sailor", and even a BW solo track or two. It could serve as the definitive document of Brian's touring days. I think something like that would get a lot of press and maybe sell fairly well.

I'd love to see a live anthology live release like this. Although, I'd imagine that Brian's team might be reluctant to release new product with Scott Bennett, and that would limit it to 2016-present.

I don’t think I feel the need for any more live Brian Wilson releases, at least not of his post-2000 solo career. (At least not anything they’re likely to ever actually release. I could go for some rarities-only sort of thing.) It’s hard to imagine a whole lot of good stuff that he’s performed, of which they have a releasable recording of a good performance, that would interest many people. Songs already released live on CD by solo Brian Wilson: Add Some Music to Your Day All Summer Long (2x) Back Home Barbara Ann Be My Baby (Ronettes cover) Brian Wilson (Barenaked Ladies cover) California Girls (2x) California Saga Caroline, No (2x) Dance, Dance, Dance Darlin’ Do It Again Don’t Talk (Put Your Head on My Shoulder) (2x) Don’t Worry Baby The First Time Fun, Fun, Fun God Only Knows (2x) Good Vibrations (2x) I Get Around Half Moon Bay Help Me, Rhonda Here Today Heroes & Villains I Just Wasn’t Made For These Times I Know There’s An Answer I’m Waiting For the Day In My Room Kiss Me, Baby Lay Down Burden Let’s Go Away For a While (2x) Love & Mercy The Little Girl I Once Knew Marcella Our Prayer Pet Sounds (2x) Please Let Me Wonder The Right Time Sail Away Sail On, Sailor Sloop John B (3x) Surfer Girl That’s Not Me This Beautiful Day This Isn’t Love This Whole World Til I Die Wild Honey Wouldn’t It Be Nice (2x) You Still Believe in Me That’s not including live DVDs, which would add: - Entirety of Pet Sounds again - Entirety of Smile - Entirety of That Lucky Old Sun - Runaway Dancer - Saturday Night on Hollywood Boulevard - Hold On Dear Brother - On the Island - Pacific Coast Highway - Summer’s Gone - 20 of the above-listed songs duplicated Oh, and then there’s whatever appeared in the Imagination and On Tour DVDs, I forgot about those. Anyway, point being, there is no shortage of live Brian Wilson material available as it is. Personally I don’t need another one unless there’s something really interesting about it. A repackaging of probably barely different, already released live tunes just isn’t all that exciting.

What I find odd about Brian's live releases is that none of them are full shows. The transition from VHS to DVD two decades ago saw most bands opting to release full concerts on DVD rather than the shorter concert films they used to release on VHS. But, for some reason, The Beach Boys and Brian Wilson never got that memo.
