This 1977 interview was posted elsewhere, but I thought everyone here would enjoy hearing a very talkative (if apparently under the weather, considering that cough!) Brian discussing things like his just-written "Still I Dream of It." This tape/video sounds speeded up a bit. Brian's speaking voice sounds a pitch too high. I'm wondering if he was high for this interview? Regardless, just hearing him (not seeing him) speak, he doesn't sound very...troubled. Actually, Brian usually did sound lucid between 1977-1981.
Knowing what I/we know now, I get sad and even frustrated hearing interviews like this when Brian was still operating at a high(er) level and hadn't yet deteriorated again until the early-mid 1980's. I want to go back in time and kidnap Brian or shelter him and not let people get to him and just let him continue to heal and recover.
I actually have the "Barbie"/"What Is A Young Girl Made Of" single by Kenny & The Cadets. Anybody wanna buy it?

And to think they actually performed it in concert. Several times, too!

A Brian interview I haven't seen before. Just look at how Landy keeps jumping in on the conversation.

That's cool! That's the first time I've seen the colorized version. And to think, 58 years later, he's still singin' that same song.

An interesting snapshot of the band in 1975 while they were riding the success of Endless Summer and Spirit Of America, and just before the Brian Is Back campaign began. Also, a few short interviews with James Guercio, who was playing bass in the band at the time and serving as unofficial adviser. I wish he not only would've continued in that role but also taken over managerial duties as well.

Watching that again just reinforces how inept the group was at that time. So, to follow up their last album, In Concert, which was released way back in '73, here they are attempting to record yet another live album. Meanwhile, in direct response to the great successes of Endless Summer and Spirit Of America, they're releasing yet another greatest hits compilation. And, forget LPs for a second, they only managed to release ONE new single between Holland and 15 Big Ones, and it was a Christmas song released two days before Christmas. With an old b-side having nothing to do with Christmas. Yoko was more capable than these guys, it seems.

They were given what very few rock bands ever get - a second chance. And, well, you laid it out, B.E., how they handled it, or started to handle it. They would be given third (1988) and fourth (2012) chances to lesser degrees, too, but still the results were pretty much the same.

I hate to agree too much, because it's boring and, frankly, just not me! But I agree. The band was on an interesting artistic track with Holland. They get a bump with Endless Summer shortly thereafter. And the response: it could be a nostalgia trip, it could be a progressive trip, and it is ... uh ... nothing. Nothing for a good long while, until there's a bizarre, croaky voiced and synth ridden half-oldies album by a bunch of fat beardos. (OK, that last part was cruel, especially for someone who should lose some weight and isn't clean shaven at the moment!) But seriously. What?

One more thought on the video - it was odd hearing the person interviewing James talk about James masterminding the Beach Boys comeback and suggesting that the Beach Boys must have lost their confidence and James coached them back up. I understand that the Beach Boys were suddenly a very success touring group at that time, but it's still odd hearing how he frames the state of the group. I suppose it's possible that he's knowledgeable of the group and recognizes that they hadn't released anything in a few years, but it feels more like he's looking past everything the group had accomplished in the late 60s-early '70s (and possibly the success/impact of Endless Summer and Spirit Of America) and viewed this tour as a return to relevance unattained since "Good Vibrations" went to #1. While this guy just seems interested in propping up James, it makes me wonder about the public at large. Just how much did the public take notice of the critical success of the early '70s Beach Boys? It still boggles my mind to see that songs like "Surf's Up", "This Whole World", "Til I Die", "Slip On Through", and "Forever" failed to chart. And let's say people noticed, did Endless Summer wipe that all away? Reminding them how much they loved THAT 'Beach Boys'?

Never heard this or heard of her, though I see she's apparently a famous actress in the Netherlands. Perhaps jk knows of her? Perhaps everyone except me knows of her!
I don't love the cover, but it has some charms. Reminds me in a way of the somewhat twee, mostly Smile or "crazy BW" covers that came out in the late 90s through early 00s. Interesting to hear.

Need to brush up on your BB history 101, the joint album with Chicago would have been released in the wake of the Beachago tour which was a huge success, this was the setlist for those shows in Landover, Maryland.
Beach Boys
1. I CAN HEAR MUSIC 2. DO IT AGAIN 3. DON'T WORRY BABY 4. SLOOP JOHN B 5. IN MY ROOM 6. THE TRADER 7. SAIL ON SAILOR (Billy Hinsche) 8. CALIFORNIA SAGA/PART THREE: CALIFORNIA 9. SURFER GIRL (Dennis on bridge) 10. HEROES AND VILLAINS 11. LITTLE DEUCE COUPE 12. CATCH A WAVE 13. WOULDN'T IT BE NICE 14. I GET AROUND 15. GOOD VIBRATIONS Encore 16. YOU ARE SO BEAUTIFUL (Dennis) 17. BARBARA ANN 18. SURFIN' U.S.A. Chicago Beginnings Does Anybody Really Know What Time It Is? Call on Me Make Me Smile Colour My World Old Days 25 or 6 to 4
Beachago 19. WISHIN' YOU WERE WERE (w/Beach Boys) 20. GOD ONLY KNOWS (w/Chicago horn section) 21. DARLIN' (Peter Cetera on lead, w/Chicago horn section) 22. SATURDAY IN THE PARK (w/Beach Boys) 23. CALIFORNIA GIRLS 24. FUN, FUN, FUN 25. FEELIN' STRONGER EVERY DAY (Peter Cetera and Mike Love on lead) 26. JUMPIN' JACK FLASH Album would have been a huge seller at Christmas.
