I've never had such an immediate downturn in an opinion of someone in so short a time. I was neutral on him, just knowing his name and reputation. But wow, it's like he's scientifically designed to make me hate him. I decided to Google him out of curiosity and he's in that band One Republic that I happen to hate. I think they're just one of those faceless, bland pop-rock groups of the 2000s. But, I don't want to be overly negative. At least he's not in Imagine Dragons. I know nothing about Imagine Dragons, except that their name reminds me of a line in a Lovin' Spoonful song about "imagine frothing dragons while you sit and wreck your lungs" - "Younger Generation", written by John B. Sebastian. Likewise, when I see the name Vampire Weekend, I always think of a song by ex-Badfinger member Joey Molland titled "Vampire Wedding".

I don't much like either of those two band names, really. But while I think Vampire Weekend are talented and sometimes really, REALLY good (sometimes not at all to my taste), Imagine Dragons are...well, they're not everything wrong with modern pop-rock music. But they're a good summary of it. Just awful.

Their mix of indie, rock, pop, and even hip hop reminds me of one of those restaurants with a big menu that doesn't make anything particularly well.

I despised the first album, both just not liking the music and thinking they were a bunch of pretentious rich kids playing at making music. (And they were a bunch of pretentious rich kids... I think maybe most of all I hated when they pretended Graceland wasn't an influence on them. Are you effing kidding me? It would be like Brian Wilson saying he'd never been into the Four Freshmen, or David Coverdale saying he'd never much cared for Led Zeppelin.) But then I liked some of Contra. But then I hated most of Modern Vampires of the City. But then I loved most of Father of the Bride (Jury is still out on Only God Was Above Us.) Imagine Dragons, to me, sounds like a band created by marketing executives. A lab-developed mix of popular sounds, all wrapped in a shiny package. I know nothing about their history, but they seem like a total fabrication.

This is probably unfair of me, but I've always kind of lumped them in with those 2000s era indie / indie-ish groups like The Killers or The Strokes. I worked in radio at the time, and a lot of my coworkers were going crazy over that stuff, and it just never landed with me. It wasn't bad, and it was a breath of fresh air compared to much of the nu metal and grunge lite band we were playing. But, it's nothing I'd want to sit and listen to.
