This morning I saw a review on Allmusic for a new album by Bill Ryder-Jones, of whom I'd never heard of. The album's title, Iechyd Da, caught my eye as unusual, and I figured it looked Welsh. (I was correct, it means something like "cheers," or "good health," like a drinking toast.)
Ryder-Jones is English, from a coastal town in Merseyside, England, but he immediately reminded me of a Welsh group (Gorky's Zygotic Mynci) and a Scottish one (The Delgados). I bought the album already, really finding it interesting. Here is one of the songs from it, "I Hold Something In My Hand."
In reading up on him, I saw a something funny: a few years ago, he put out an album called Yawn ... and then an album of different recordings of those same songs, Yawny Yawn. Gee, I wonder where he got those title ideas!?

I heard a new single by Dent May, "One Call, That's All." It's what I'd call a power pop song, heavy on the pop and a little light on the power. But a catchy though slight tune of the sort I've really come to enjoy more over the past decade or so.
May is a guy I first heard doing ukelele music maybe 15 years ago or so, since which time he's gone into various styles of music.

Billy Joel just announced a new single - Turn the Lights Back On - to be released on Feb 1.
This is Joel's first new music in almost 20 years. Other than a standalone single in 2007 and a classical album in 2001, Joel has chosen to not release any new music since 1993's River of Tears. Although, he's still a prolific touring artist.

Billy Joel released "Turn the Lights Back On," his first original song since 2007. I have to say, his voice sounds surprisingly good.

I was about to say he sounded great when I saw him in concert. Then, I realized my lone Billy Joel show will be ten years ago this summer.

Blue Oyster Cult have announced a new album....sort of.
On April 12, they'll release Ghost Stories. But, other than a stray track from 2016, the songs were recorded between 1978-1983.
They're calling it the end of their recorded legacy.

Both have officially announced new albums, with the Lemon Twigs' being released on May 3rd, and Kacey Musgraves' March 15th. Can't wait!

Thank you! I hadn't seen either of these being released. I knew Musgraves had teased new music, but didn't know there was a song and album announcement. And LT, I had no clue. Very cool.

The first two singles from the aforementioned Vampire Weekend song came out last night. Neither grabbed me immediately, but I find VW songs are often growers.

New music ... which is to say an octogenarian covering a song first released in 1967 and written at least as early as 1965. Keith Richards's version of Lou Reed's "I'm Waiting for the Man" is out in advance of an upcoming tribute to Reed that will also feature Rufus Wainwright, Lucinda Williams, Joan Jett & the Blackhearts, Rosanne Cash, and others.
This one has been redone many times over the years, and there is nothing too dramatic about this version, but I think Richards does a great job.

Today, Bruce Dickinson (Iron Maiden) released his first solo album since 2005 - The Mandrake Project.
Only one listen, but pretty good. Interestly, he takes back a song that he allowed Maiden to use. In 2015, If Eternity Should Fail was the lead track on Maiden's Book of Souls album. Bruce had originally intended it to be a solo song. Nine years later, he included the song with slightly different lyrics and title - Eternity Has Failed.
This is probably more a sign of lack of tangible sales than a reflection on demand for a new Bruce album, but the album is currently Amazon's #1 selling CD/Vinyl.

And, based on what he has...consumed...over the years, rightfully so. But, what's really amazing is that despite what he put down his throat and up his nose, his singing voice has remained intact. I mean, he could've easily ended up like Bob Dylan and Brian and Dennis Wilson and whoever, but Keith actually still sounds good.

The other day I was thinking how many bands and artists I like either have already or are coming out with new music this year: Dent May, Gruff Rhys, Hurray for the Riff Raff, Iron & Wine, Kacey Musgraves, Lemon Twigs, MGMT, St. Vincent, Yard Act, Vampire Weekend... I was half-jokingly thinking all that was missing was my old 00s and early 10s favorite Of Montreal.
Of Montreal announced a new album for release in May, Lady on the Cusp. Unfortunately, as is the case with their past few albums, I can't really get excited about it after listening to the first single, "Yung Hearts Bleed Free."
When they moved from Kinks and psychedelia-obsessed indie pop to more synth-driven music in the late 00s, I was still on board. But over the past decade or so, there is less and less melody, fewer and fewer hooks. They retreated from the funky stuff in the early to mid 10s with a pair of albums, but since then it's really all-in on synths and (sorry, Kevin Barnes) nonsense.
I'm not saying I won't get it ... but I'm going to wait and preview more songs before I decide to get it.
