Well, today's the day. In just over four hours, the work day ends, and "Summer Time" begins!!!
Despite the weather likely only reaching 75 this weekend, I'll likely break out some of my summer music out on the deck. Still undecided on the type of beers I'm getting for grilling tomorrow, so that means I'll probably spend an inordinate amount of time at the liquor store.
....
And so begins the Summer of 2023. I feel like mine got a bit of an early start with some time spent in the tropics in Early May on that cruise I went on.
But, now that it's Memorial Day Weekend, it's here. Several months of warm weather, sunshine well past 8pm, and summer music. I know it'll go by in the blink of an eye, but I do my best to try to savor it each year.

Well, today is the official unofficial kickoff of summer in the U.S.: happy Memorial Day.

Hi all,
There are three starts to summer. Memorial Day is the unofficial start of summer. There are some who say that is when summer starts. The meteorologists say that summer starts on June first. For others summer starts on June 21. Each one is correct. I hope that people had a happy memorial day. Happy summer to the people whose summer started on Monday.

Mary I tend to view Memorial Day Friday as the "kick off" of "summer time." Summer time, to me doesn't always necessarily mean summer, since we're not into meteorological summer or the solstice.

When I was young, summer began when school ended: simple as that! Since then, I don't think so much in terms of "official" summer by any of the definitions, since summer for me really means time off ... which sadly most adults don't get!
But roughly Memorial Day/June 1 tend to be when I start thinking it's summer. That said, if it starts warming up in mid-May, I'm happy to think of that as summer. I guess now for me, summer is mostly whether I'm having to mow the lawn, whether the garden is planted, whether I can comfortably sit on the patio after work, whether I can go outside without putting on more clothes or a coat, etc.
This being Minnesota (well, technically I'm in Wisconsin...but since I'm usually in Minnesota), summer seems like it's never going to come--until it's way too hot and there's no questioning it. You know, daily highs seem like 50, 50, 55, 50, 60, 71, 88, 95, 90, 86! That sort of thing. (I'm exaggerating a bit. But barely. That really is how it goes up here in the northern Midwest. Minneapolis is to be around 90 every day for the coming week or two.)

Yeah, summer doesn't quite have that same rush that it did when you're a kid and school ends.
Speaking of lawns, I cut mine two days ago, and my lawn, and several in my street, are already getting a little crispy. We've had a pretty dry May, but I'm not used to seeing crispy parts of the grass this early.

I understand we got a little rain yesterday and could get more today in Minneapolis, which would be much needed. Similar situations with lawns early on, which isn't doing the patches I'd seeded any good. (And I try not to be one of those lawn-waterers, as it just feels wasteful to me.) Curious to see what kind of growth and/or death I'll see in the lawn and garden when I get home Saturday.

I've been thinking about putting some seed down because I do have some bare spots on the lawn. But, with things being so dry lately, that would probably be a big waste.

I've been loving this Wisconsin early summer weather, sunny and in the middle-high 70s every day, low 60s every night. I'm keeping an eye on the Minneapolis weather, where I see it's more like 90 every day. I almost dread going home Saturday...

We're finally going to hit 90 for the first time tomorrow. On average, the Baltimore area usually hits 90 degrees for the first time in Mid May.
Looks like it'll be short lived though. Some late evening rain on Saturday will put our highs in the mid to high 70s for most of next week.

Well, my little working vacation is over: I'll be spending the better part of today driving back to Minneapolis. Been a great time here on Lake Michigan. But man, I really hate long drives.

Home sweet home. I swear, though, Wisconsinites are the worst drivers in the world. Or at least the Midwest. Multiple instances both there and back of standstill, rush-hour style traffic that didn't seem to have any cause: no accidents, construction, or anything else. (A few more of them that did have causes.) I think it's because they seem to split between people going 55 on the interstate, and people weaving between lanes going 95 on the interstate. In the end, it seems to jam thing up, not to mention enrage those of us who just like to chug along at a pace closer to (though admittedly well above...) the speed limits.
It's 90 here: the lawn is looking crispy and the garden is looking a little sad. I'll water the latter.
And finally, I somewhat begrudgingly weighed in for the first time in a little over a week ... and I've somehow lost 5 lbs on this little semi-vacation. I don't know quite how, but I won't ask questions.

I saw my first few lightning bugs last night once it got dark.
None tonight, but after an 81 degree day, the temps have dipped into the low 60s.

Today is the last day in this current weather pattern, which has had Minneapolis around 90, humid, and thanks to some wildfires in Quebec, adding air thick with pollution as an extra slap in the face.
Thankfully we're supposed to have a new system move in, drop the humidity, possibly rain, and hopefully clear that smoke out of here. It'll be more like 80 for the coming week or so, much more like it. Right now, it's uncomfortable even to walk down the block, not to mention unhealthy for many groups of people.
