You guys are too hard on "temporary Secretary"! It's a work of art. One of the coolest songs Paul ever did.

It's annoying as hell! Right down there at the bottom with Monkberry Moon Delight and that real stinker, Smile Away. Of course, when you find out the real story behing McCartney II, it makes sense. He wasn't planning on making an album at all. The last two Wings albums, London Town and Back to the Egg, took an eternity to make. He just wanted to have some fun making music for pleasure. His own.

I saw Paul perform it live - and loved it! So did the audience. And Paul is very selective what he performs:

The old saying "one man's trash is another man's treasure" is quite fitting here.

I think of all the solo songs he's never done live, and he has to play THIS? No More Lonely Nights, Take it Away, Wanderlust, Ballroom Dancing, Waterfalls, Heart of the Country, Another Day....

I dug out an old mixtape last week - OLD! As in 1982. I was surprised at how many Macca/Wings/Beatles songs were on that. I guess that was the height of my Macca fandom. Ebony and Ivory had come out, but Tug of War was still a few weeks away, and in those pre-internet days, exact release dates weren't always known. I remember going to Tower Records about once a week, hoping to see Tug of War. All I could find was a 12 inch single of Ebony and Ivory, with the standard version on the a-side, and a solo version by Paul on the flip. It also included the last McCartney/Laine collaboration, Rainclouds. Great song. In fact, I like it better than a couple of songs that did make it onto TOW.

Tug of War, 1982. Tug of War Take it Away Somebody Who Cares What's That You're Doing (with Stevie Wonder) Here Today Ballroom Dancing The Pound is Sinking Wanderlust Get it (with Carl Perkins) Be What You See Dress Me Up as a Robber Ebony and Ivory Tug of War started off as a Wings album. The band rehearsed the songs in the latter part of 1980. Paul has always blamed it on George Martin that it became a solo album with guest stars. Laurence Juber said the songs didn't feel like band songs, felt Paul's songwriting was getting away from what worked for the band. Somewhere along the way, Juber and Steve Holley were informed they wouldn't be part of the album, but Denny Laine was still there. Denny is on about half of the songs. Linda's participation is limited to background vocals. Attachments:

Summer of 1982, there was another 12 inch single from Paul, "Take it Away" on the A side, with "I'll Give You a Ring" and "Dress Me Up as a Robber" on the b side. It was odd that "Take it Away" was just the standard album version. Maybe these were issued for club play or for radio? Maybe radio was already getting away from playing 45's.

Tug of War Take it Away Somebody Who Cares What's That You're Doing (with Stevie Wonder) Here Today Ballroom Dancing The Pound is Sinking Wanderlust Get it (with Carl Perkins) Be What You See Dress Me Up as a Robber Ebony and Ivory I like Tug Of War. There's some quality songs on there. A few are also very commercial and very 80-ish. I think Paul was still singing at a high level. He still sounded like....Paul. And, plenty of MTV videos!
BEST SONG: I like the title track, "Take It Away", "Here Today", "Ballroom Dancing", and Wanderlust". I guess I'm supposed to choose "Here Today". It is a good song, well-sung, but it never "got to me" like I thought - or hoped - it might. This is a tough one. I'm going to go with "Take It Away". There's a lot of parts to like about the song, and I like them all.
WORST SONG: Probably "What's That You're Doing" (too long), "Get It" (too hokey; doesn't fit on the album), or "Be What You See" (not really a song). I remember having to sit through "What's That You're Doing" - and did we really need two Stevie Wonder duets? - so I'll go with that one. Maybe if they cut it in half/edited it, similar to what The Beach Boys did with "Here Comes The Night".

This may come as a surprise from me, but I actually like What's That You're Doing. I think I actually like it better than Ebony and Ivory in fact.

Tug of War might be the only Paul McCartney solo album that doesn't have an obvious "Worst" standout, or, as in some of the later years, several candidates for worst.
Best - Wanderlust - This was a tough one, as I really enjoy the title track, Ballroom Dancing, and Here Today (although I actually like some of the later live versions of Here Today better) among others.
Worst - Get It - OK, maybe this one is a little obvious.

Ebony and Ivory is one of those songs that was so popular that everybody hates it! You Light Up My Life, anyone? Here Today was very moving back in the day, and it's not a bad song at all, but it's not one of my favorites now.
