Another good set of lyrics from Tony. Funny, the first time I ever listened to Pet Sounds, I thought the lyric was "I missed by pet and the places I'd known" because I thought they were trying to make a thematic connection to the album title. It’s not “pet”? 🤣🤷♀️ I thought it was "pal".

As for former Mayor of Friendville, I find that concept pretty relatable. Although, I'll admit, 90% of the time, I never had any delusion that the girl in question would come around to me, so that's where this song and I part ways. There was only once that ever happened in my life. It was nice, except for the friction it caused between me and my guy-friend.

I like the "I'm Waiting For The Day" lyrics, too. And Brian sings them both tenderly and edgy. Or perturbed. And that was different for Brian. It's interesting to hear Brian...mad at somebody!
On a side note, I always considered "I'm Waiting For The Day" to be the more (most?) underrated song on the album. It's never lumped in with the other "biggies" on the album, but it's darn close.
To briefly leap into the fray, that's such a key aspect of this song. This is the first time I've seen it commented on (except maybe someone complaining about a "shouty Brian"). And yes, I'd say it's the most underrated song on the album. And the most varied, but now I'm getting off topic...

Track #7: Sloop John B. (Trad.)
We come on the Sloop John B, my grandfather and me. Around Nassau town we did roam ... drinking all night ... got into a fight ... well, I feel so broke up, I wanna go home!
So hoist up the John B sail. See how the main sail sets? Call for the captain ashore, let me go home! Let me go home! I wanna go home (yeah yeah)! Well I feel so broke up I wanna go home!
The first mate, he got drunk and broke in the captain's trunk. The constable had to come and take him away. Sheriff John Stone, why don't you leave me alone? I feel so broke up, I wanna go home.
So hoist up...
The poor cook, he caught the fits and threw away all my grits, then he took and he ate up all of my corn. Let me go home. Why don't they let me go home? This is the worst trip I've ever been on.
So hoist up...

I'll dive right in on this one: lyrically while it doesn't fit Pet Sounds at all, I think it fits Pet Sounds perfectly. Clear? Great! Thanks, I'm out of here...
But really, these words about such mishaps aboard a ship in the Caribbean don't directly relate to the themes of young adulthood, love and loss, relative alienation and personal growth from the rest of the album. But they do relate. Who is our singer in "Sloop John B" if not some alternate of the singer in "That's Not Me," for example? Or "I Just Wasn't Made For These Times?" This is somebody who has left home (albeit with his grandfather...) and gone on an adventure of sorts aboard a ship. And ... it sucks. He's miserable. Maybe the exhuberance of "Wouldn't It Be Nice?" was misplaced, maybe adulthood sucks, maybe our amateur sailor misses his pad and the places he's known, and every night as he lays there alone he would dream...
Musically, it's a great fit. And lyrically, I think it's simultaneously a nice respite or distraction from the heavier fare, while also being a different take on the exact same themes, just in another time and place.
Now, are the lyrics themselves especially amazing? No, not really. They're funny, basically. Sad, but funny. But it's a folk song, nobody's looking for Shakespeare.

Reminds me of an ill fated trip to Ocean City with a friend of mine several Decembers ago, although it least the music's jolly here.
No, but SJB's lyrics are fun and memorable. And that's saying a lot from me as I am terrible at remembering lyrics. Actually, now that I think about it, despite my difficulty at remembering lyrics, I do have pretty good recall with many of the BB's 60s hits.

There is an alternate version with Carl singing lead, where he sings "I feel so break up". Huh? Maybe I heard wrong. I've heard so many versions of this song - Kingston Trio, Barry McGuire, Johnny Cash - but Brian elevated this simple folk song to a work of art. "This is the worst trip I've ever been on" - a drug reference? lol

"This is the worst trip I've ever been on" - a drug reference? lolOn the two things bolded: - The earliest and most versions actually say "break up." I assume it was just the nongrammatical slang from the old folk song maintaining its place. - I believe the "worst trip I've ever been on" line was introduced by the Beach Boys, and it has been speculated exactly that: a drug reference. Previous versions said "this is the worst trip since I have been born." This Kingston Trio version has both items referenced contrary to the Beach Boys' released version (break up / since I have been born).

I stand to be corrected (I could be totally wrong) but on The Beach Boys' version, isn't one Beach Boy/track singing "I feel so break up" and another (or the same) Beach Boy/track singing "I feel so broke up" right over the top. It is awkward, but you can hear two distinct words - break AND broke - at the same time.

In recent years, Al had sung the last line as "This is the best trip, I've ever been on" at Brian's shows.

Hey, I'll give Al credit for at least deviating from the norm and attempting something...different. He hasn't exactly been known for that.

Obviously it doesn't make sense as a lyric specific to the song. He's just trying to comment on the experience overall, obviously, and likely thinks it's clever. It's actually a very Mike move. Not at all a big deal, though.

Above I mentioned that I thought Brian sang both "I feel so BROKE up" AND "I feel so BREAK up" over each other. Listen to this vocals only version at :53
