Happy 80th Birthday to the talented and ever fascinating Van Dyke Parks! The person I would most like to have dinner with.

I would not have guessed that Van Dyke Parks is 80 years old. He doesn't look it. I never thought of Van Dyke Parks as just months younger than Brian Wilson. The way the story went that Brian befriended him and gave him money and bought him a car, I always thought of Van Dyke as like "the kid" working with the seasoned veteran in Brian, though Van Dyke already had a resume' of his own.

I know - I was so surprised when I saw he was was 80. He still doesn’t look it. I still have a big crush on him. He is still cute and has an amazing mind. I always thought he would be my perfect intellectual match. I don’t care if he’s a bit pretentious or quit Twitter in a hissy fit after Elon Musk took over. I know I could bring him to his senses. A girl can dream.

I think it's because Brian had such massive success at such a young age, while Van Dyke was on the periphery of the industry. So by 1966 or so, Brian has been a major figure in rock and roll for years with numerous hits under his belt. It's like rookie shooting guard Ochai Agbachi versus veteran shooting guard RJ Barrett. Barrett is actually slightly younger, but he's a 4-year vet because he was one-and-done, and had more success sooner. However, I also think Van Dyke seemed younger because he's a physically smaller man, and he has that spritely twinkle about him, both in his eyes and voice. (In the past few decades, of course, as Brian has aged beyond his years, the difference seems even greater. It would have been fun to see them working together as a pair of young twentysomethings, when they both were funny, when they both had energy.)

Great way of putting it - Kapitan - “Spritely twinkle”. I suspect that not only could Van Dyke run circles around me - he could also drink me under the table!

I met him briefly after a show in Minneapolis in '12. ( This is the review of that show. I'm pretty sure that he also did "Heroes & Villains" that night, though it isn't mentioned in the review.) I was shocked to see how tiny he was. (I'm 6-3, so slightly taller than Brian.) I could've picked him up and tossed him over my shoulder. He was very kind, though. The fact that he was mingling in the lobby after a show was pretty remarkable, really. The show was fantastic, too, a trio setting.

This is cool. Han Reiziger (1934–2006) ate, breathed and slept music -- of every kind, although Mozart was his big passion. They tried to replace him when he retired in 2001 but he and that Sunday morning programme, Reiziger in Muziek, were unthinkable without each other and it didn't work. Here he is interviewing VDP. The comprehensible bit begins at 2:20: Belated Happy Birthday, sir.

Amazing that Orange Crate Art was only about 6 years old if that performance is 2001.
