No, to be honest, I am largely ignorant of the Dead. But when I have tried to listen to some of their albums (a few of those 70ish albums like American Beauty), honestly I came away unmoved. I didn't hate it by any means, I just didn't care. It was just fine.
Their super-fans, on the other hand...?
(On the other hand I think I probably dislike annoying fans of every band, including the Beach Boys.)

I can't say that I've explored a ton of the Dead's catalog, but by and large, what I've heard hasn't enticed me to dig deeper. And, in general, I just don't really care for jam bands.
The lone Dead song I like is Touch of Grey, which is probably their Kokomo.
And I'm with Kap in that the Dead Head thing kinda rubs me the wrong way in kind of a similar way that pot culture has.

I'm quite fond of the Dead, what I know of them. That being the self-titled debut, Anthem of the Sun, American Beauty and the fantastic fifty-minute-plus "Dark Star"/"St. Stephen"/"The Eleven"/"Turn On Your Love Light"* segment of Live/Dead. Long live the CD (rather that the frustration of juggling with LP sides).
"Viola Lee Blues" closes their debut:
* And leave it on!

Three days before the Dead concert I attended, a friend from college came to stay with me, and brought a suitcase full of Dead concert tapes, which she played all day and well into the night. Needless to say, I was pretty tired of listening to the Grateful Dead, by the time we left for the concert.

Needless to say, I was pretty tired of listening to the Grateful Dead, by the time we left for the concert. I actually purposely avoid listening to an act I'm about to see in concert for about a week or two leading up to the show, for that very reason. The only exception is if they have new material that I want to try to learn.

There are two tracks on that list ("Pet Sounds" and "Leaving This Town") that I wouldn't vote off even at pistol point. To quote a Beatles' song...It won't be long.

Then I saw you bolded âLeaving This Townâ and I was like - ok đ

Sticking with âLong Tall Texanâ and adding its compatriot âBe True To Your Schoolâ. Yeah, I gotta get these two outta here (that's my vote), again not because I don't like them, but because they're not even...entirely...BB songs.
