California Dreamin' is now among the Beach Boys 10 currently most played songs on Spotify. Though it's not doing near the numbers Kate Bush's 1985 song, Running Up That Hill is doing. It's currently the most played song in the US and second globally.

That's amazing the power a well placed song in a TV show or movie can have.
I've always enjoyed the BB version of California Dreamin, but never imagined it would become that popular. In 2022, no less.

It's so interesting in an era when all of that music is already always available to everyone that something forgotten, ignored, or living in its niche market can suddenly become huge (either again or for the first time).
I think back to Nick Drake's "Pink Moon," which I sure had never heard of when it became repopularized around 2000 in a VW(?) commercial. Suddenly it seemed a person could find his albums, there was a documentary, and of course that song became popular again. And that was before the streaming services and YouTube made things that much easier to capitalize on placements.

It's too bad that California Dreamin' didn't make the cut on the new SOS release.

Kapitan, Ed Carter and Mike Kowalski worked with Nick Drake briefly.

Kapitan, Ed Carter and Mike Kowalski worked with Nick Drake briefly. Wow, I hadn't realized that! I was going to guess it must have been either live or on Bryter Layter, and I see from a quick online search that it was the latter. I knew John Cale and Richard Thompson were involved, but somehow missed that. Actually when I bought it in the early 00s and perused the liners, I probably didn't yet know who Ed and Mike were. Very cool.

It's too bad that California Dreamin' didn't make the cut on the new SOS release. It should've. The exclusion is a little bizarre, considering it was included on the Warmth of the Sun compilation, which was released as a companion to Sounds of Summer back in 2007. Most of the tracks from WOTS were included on the SOS 2.0 release, so it seems like the obvious move would've been to make WOTS the second disc of SOS 2.0, and create a third disc with the other album tracks.

But, by all means, include California Feelin' on yet another comp. I feel like somebody over at BRI really, really believes that California Feelin' is destined to have an "a-ha" moment in culture at large.

So, I saw Top Gun: Maverick in theaters today (which did not disappoint!) and what do I hear featured in a TV show trailer? "Heroes and Villains". I can't find the shorter version of the trailer I saw in theaters (which ended with an isolated Mike vocal singing "Heroes and Villains"), but here's the full trailer:

I think it's time to bring back the Made in USA album from 1986. Add on a few extras: Lady Liberty, Chasin' the Sky, Runaway. I would buy it.

I think it would actually make more sense to put some of those 80s era non album cuts on an expanded Still Cruisin. Or, maybe a 80s anthology style release. I don't think it's likely, but given how much they're hyping the expanded Sounds of Summer release, I doubt any of their previous comps would be reissued any time soon.

Well you can always wait until the 2030s, when the copyright extensions come out! They'd likely include those tunes for those years.
