Well - the Kansas City Chiefs just had Travis Kelce, Harrison Butker and Charvarius Ward placed on the reserve/COVID-19 list. Can we just start treating COVID like the flu yet? I'm just so done with it. I know over 100 people that have had it (I work in healthcare - so most of my coworkers have had it)- and only ONE was even hospitalized! One ex-coworker lost her over 60, overweight diabetic husband to it, but he was already in very bad health. Kelce is vaccinated, so there is hope he will be able to play by Sunday.

I thought I heard that the NFL was changing the protocols so that vaccinated players no longer need to be tested regularly.
Personally (maybe this should be reserved for the COVID thread), I think that's how we should be moving forward with this thing. In you're vaccinated, especially if you got the booster, your odds of getting seriously ill are low, and you're not as transmissible.
For my job, you're have to be tested weekly only if you're not vaccinated. This seems like the way to go.

Kapitan's Vikings are back in a playoff spot. Is Zimmer still on the hot seat? Also, can we please stop showing the Bears on primetime national tv?

One of our sports page headlines today is "Why does a .500 record feel so different for the Vikings and Wolves?"
That might be one of the dumbest headlines I've ever read in a sports page. Uh, maybe it's because the Vikings historically win 9-12 games a year (out of 16), while the Wolves historically win about 25-30 (of 82).
If one kid aces every test, and another flunks every test, and suddenly they both get Cs, you're going to look at the Cs differently for each kid. Obviously.

It's like that in Baltimore too.
If the Ravens have a winning season, or make the playoffs and get bumped in the first round, it's generally viewed by fans as a failure.
Yet, Baltimore was ecstatic when the Orioles made the playoffs three of out five years from 2012-16.

Despite losing badly in Cincinnati on Sunday, the Ravens actually gained ground and found themselves in the AFC's #7 seed on Sunday night.
But, a Miami win last night put the Ravens back on the outside looking in.
We have two games at home against the Rams and Steelers. And one of our better defenders, LB Tyus Bowser, just tested positive for COVID.

RIP to John Madden, certainly my favorite TV analyst of all time...and a heck of a coach, even if his Super Bowl came at the Vikings' expense. (I was six months old at the time, so I wasn't especially invested in that one.) I know some people were turned off by his bumbling persona, but I always found him funny.
For some reason, one particular funny statement always stuck in my mind. Madden was calling a 49ers game in the early '90s. He got off talking about golf, and specifically Davis Love III, then back to football. It all got jumbled to the point it wasn't clear what they were even talking about. And he said:
"If I could take any one player, I'd take Davis Love Three." (I thought it was funny he said "three" instead of "the third.")
"For football?" the play-by-play guy (probably Pat Summerall) asked.
Without missing even half a beat, Madden vigorously said "Football, I'd take Pierce Holt!"
Holt was a linebacker on the 49ers who had just gotten a tackle. I don't know what it was, the silliness of it, the way he said Love's name, the quick thinking even as he sounded like a bumbling moron, or what. But that cracked, and cracks, me up.
(By the way, I bet it was in the 1992 season. Love had a very strong run that year, and it was Holt's lone Pro Bowl season.)

I only knew him in real time during his last few years (basically his NBC stint), but I loved hearing him call games every Sunday night. The only guy who was somewhat close to his style was John Gruden and I don't think he'll be back in a booth anytime soon.

It was always a treat when Pat Summerall and John Madden broadcasted a game. You always got that great combination of experience (they both played/coached in the NFL), expertise, and humor. And, the humor was especially important.
As much as I liked the team of Pat Summerall and John Madden, my all-time favorite NFL broadcasting team was Pat Summerall and Tom Brookshier. They had a great chemistry and camaraderie, too. In addition to broadcasting NFL games, they also hosted the weekly TV show, This Week In Pro Football, which featured game highlights and that great, old NFL Films music by Sam Spence. Actually, Madden replaced Brookshier, which disappointed me at the time. Is there anybody out there who remembers the team of Pat Summerall and Tom Brookshier?

My love affair with the NFL began in 1996 when Baltimore got a team. So, I had a few years of Madden / Summerall before Summerall retired and NBC bought Madden.
I'll never forgot watching a game during the postseason for the 2000 season, I believe in Green Bay when John commented on the food coming back from a TV timeout. And Summerall said "Is that all you think about, John?"

Well, our grim season looks like it may end with more whimper than roar: WR Adam Thielen is out for season-ending ankle surgery. He had already missed a couple of games and was banged up through a couple more.
Dalvin Cook is back from the COVID list, but we've still got players on that (and of course, famously being the least vaccinated team in the league, that has been the case all year even before omicron), as well as a handful of important players being questionable for the game, like Harrison Smith, fullback CJ Ham, and TE Tyler Conklin (whose role would be expanded without Thielen).
We play at division-leading Green Bay Sunday night in what is expected to be a very cold night game. At 7-8, the playoffs don't seem likely.

The Bengals just need to win one more game to clinch the AFC North. I'm not super confident about beating the Chiefs, but the Browns have been getting worse it seems as the season goes on and we play them next weekend. It'll be our first playoff appearance since the infamous Steelers game in 2016 where we had the game in hand until a massive choke job lost us the game.

Wow, just finished watching “All Madden” on Fox and it literally made me cry. My husband is still in a pool of tears next to me. Back when the Chiefs were horrible and Kenny Stabler was quarterback, I was a big fan of the Oakland Raiders. Then of course, John Madden and Pat Summerall, were Monday Night Football. Of 38 interview requests for the documentary, all 38 were granted, including Lawrence Taylor and Bill Belichick, who typically never give interviews. It is both touching and entertaining and thankfully John was able to view the documentary on Christmas Day with his family, three days before his death. I highly recommend the documentary.
