First-round OT Christian Darrisaw, a rookie who was expected to compete for (and realistically, to win) a starting job this fall to improve our shaky-at-best offensive line, has had a second surgery this year on a groin injury that has affected him since before the draft and kept him out of training camp to date.
"There's optimism Darrisaw can recover quickly and be ready for Week 1," per the story in today's paper ... but there was optimism he'd be participating in training camp after the first surgery, too.

Hey, our first rounder's getting groin surgery too, Bateman. They think he could possibly be healthy by Week 1 also.

I've lost any and all faith in optimistic team statements about players' health. Last year, Danielle Hunter was just missing a practice for a tweak in his back or neck or something. Then another. And another. And another. Nothing to worry about, he's not injured! Then he missed the season with that "non-injury."
And on the NBA side, it was similar. Our starting (and very expensive) point guard D'Angelo Russell was just missing a game for rest, he wasn't hurt or anything. Then he missed another one, OK, his leg was sore. He missed 25 games.
So yeah, when he's on the field, I'll believe he'll be back soon. Until then, I'm a skeptic.

Are you ready for some football? Preseason football?
Eagles vs. Steelers tonight. The starters will probably play a series. And then, either I'll fall asleep or it's channel-surfing time.

I am...not. I have to admit, even Vikings preseason barely does it for me anymore. There was a time I was dying to see who'd perform well enough to earn that spot as third-string tailback or whatever, but no more. The quality of play is just not good!
But the real deal? Yep, I'm going to be ready to start the season with my perennial combo of optimism and cynicism. It's a weird mix. And then the balance shifts as results dictate...

Back when the Ravens were new, I used to look forward to those humid August nights watching Preseason football. Although, in the late 90s / early 00s, the starters used to play a lot more than they do now.
Nowadays, I'll just read the Cliff's Notes the next day.

This afternoon the Vikings kick off their preseason against Denver. Some strange COVID-related aspects:
- They are allowing full capacity at US Bank Stadium, and expect it full - They are not requiring attendees to be vaccinated, but recommend it and are doing vaxxes outside - They are not requiring masks, but are recommending it of all fans
I don't know what would be the smartest thing right now, considering the Delta variant. Honestly if I were in charge, I might require masks or proof of vaccination (or both). It's going to be interesting how many people comply with the "recommendations" and how many people end up tracing COVID back to the game.
Jake Browning, who has been in competition with Nate Stanley for the backup job but more importantly was the only QB to see the field throughout camp so far thanks to that COVID snafu, is likely to play the bulk of the game. Zimmer already said rookie Kellen Mond--the guy who actually got COVID--won't play at all because of the time he's missed. This from someone considered the QB of the future...
As for the game itself, starters aren't expected to see the field much. Since it's a weekend afternoon game, I might tune in for a bit, just to see it. Or I might not. It's one of those things where it'll probably depend on whether I find myself with nothing to do.

The Ravens have now won 18 straight PreSeason games. The most meaningless winning streak in all of pro sports.
For now, the Ravens are requiring masks at indoor locations at the stadium (ie. restrooms or club level). Nothing about proof of vaccination or masks elsewhere yet. Although, I have a feeling that could change once the weather cools.
The Ravens won their lone home preseason game Saturday night, so the next home game is over a month away, so I'm expecting things to change.

I watched some of the Vikings' preseason opener. Most starters sat, and yikes, did it show. They were absolutely terrible. Hopefully it'll be a different situation with the first-teamers out there. But if nothing else, this did how how our depth is nothing to count on.

I didn't watch any of the Ravens game. It sounds like Tyler Huntley should have the inside track for back up QB.
The most encouraging thing I read about that game is that second year MLB Patrick Queen apparently looked great, after a somewhat underwhelming rookie season.

I didn't catch this live, but check out Coach Zimmer's comments from the halftime interview Saturday. It pretty well sums things up!

Our star 2nd-year WR Justin Jefferson hurt his shoulder almost two weeks ago and there was fear he might miss the early part of the season. He returned to practice already and might even play in the next preseason game, on Saturday.
On the other hand, star LB Anthony Barr hasn't practiced in over a week. What's the injury? "He's got something that he's dealing with," coach Zimmer says. Thanks, coach, that clears it up. Obviously after Danielle Hunter last season, those sorts of statements aren't comforting to me.

Vikings 0-2 in the preseason. Granted, several starters have yet to play, and those who have, haven't played much. But it ain't pretty so far.
And can I call 'em, or what!? After having held out Anthony Barr for practices, first saying there was nothing wrong at all, then going so far as "he's got something he's dealing with," now Coach Zimmer says his health "is a little concern." Just like with Danielle Hunter last season, little by little, the non-injury just extends and expands... Hunter missed the season last year. Hopefully that won't be the case with Barr.
Honestly sometimes I wonder why media doesn't press teams on their evolving explanations. I suppose it's because sports media isn't really journalism, it's more a partnership in the overall spectacle.

The Ravens just won their 19th straight preseason game.
To put things in perspective, this streak began in 2015. We've won one playoff off in this time.
