Jerry Moss, the M in A & M Records with Herb Alpert, passed away at the age of 88. Eek. I see there's a Beach Boys connection: "November 1969: Almo/Irving Music, a music publisher co-owned by Herb Alpert and Jerry Moss, buys the Beach Boys' Sea of Tunes song catalog from Murry Wilson (father of three Beach Boys) for $700,000." [ Source] Of all A&M's roster of artists I think I like Herb Alpert & The Tijuana Brass the best, starting with this one: Wonderful stuff. Rest in peace, Mr Moss.

I have a Herb Alpert & The Tijuana Brass greatest hits comp and I love it! Yeah, some of the music is a bit dated and some of the songs are a little corny, but I can put on that music any time and enjoy it. Great melodies and arrangements. It's makes you feel good.

One of the best album covers ever! My parents had this album and I loved listening to it and always thought the cover was so cool.

I recall drooling over this cover while working in a local store's record department in the mid '60s. Was it the young lady? Or was it the cream? Both, I should imagine. I see A&M also had in their stable The Baja Marimba Band headed by one Julius Wechter, he of bicycle bell fame on Pet Sounds, to say nothing of timps, vibes and sundry untuned percussion. This is the BMB's debut single and biggest hit, 1963's "Comin' In The Back Door": en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Baja_Marimba_Band

Bernie Marsden, guitarist for the early version of Whitesnake, passed yesterday at 72. He cowrote several of their early songs, including Here I Go Again and Fool For Your Loving, both of which became big hits when rerecorded in the late 80s.

Do you know if he had been ill? I know that while he hasn't had sustained success, he was still a touring musician.

The articles I saw just said he was surrounded by family when he passed, so I guess it was some sort of illness. I came across this few-years-old video of Marsden performing (on a Joe Bonamassa-led theme tour) what has to be his biggest hit ever--and probably Whitesnake's--"Here I Go Again." Honestly I am a fan of the Hammond organ sound more than the synthy 80s version. And I had no idea that Marsden had such a nice voice. He wasn't a wailer or powerhouse vocalist, but he'd be a great change-of-pace kind of singer. Personally, I love that kind of thing, like giving George a few Beatles tunes or Roger or Brian a few Queen tunes.

Yes, Bernie had a good voice indeed. I read that Bernie's cause of death was bacterial meningitis.

Herb Alpert is coming to my town in a couple months. Thinking I should go see him. Mom loved the Tijuana Brass albums.

Driving to the beach yesterday afternoon, my wife and I were listening to some Jimmy Buffett songs. I mentioned that he apparently has a new album out in the fall.
Checked my phone early this morning, and the first thing I saw is the news that Jimmy Buffett just died at the age of 76.
He did have to cancel his 2023 tour for health reasons, but there hadn't been any updates. The only news I'd been seeing from him was news about the new album. Sadly, it appears that album will be a swan song.
