Rapper MF Doom, an artist on the (local to me) Rhymesayers label whom I believe was one of the (few?) rappers our very own jk enjoyed, reportedly died on Halloween 2020. He was known for wearing a mask, having a kind of comic-book persona, and for his clever wordplay that went from obscure and intricate to silly and broad.
His family and the label released a statement yesterday.
He was 49. No cause of death was given.
Yes, I'm quite the fan. Your memory is excellent, Cap'n. Terrible news. (I see his son died three years ago.) It's been a very long day -- I'll get back to you on Doom tomorrow.

Yes, MF Doom was recommended to me by Ovi, a poster at SS and a huge rap fan. He pointed me at various Doom albums, of which Take Me to Your Leader and Madvillainy are probably my favourites. I love the cartoony approach (littered with samples from movies and even from the likes of Frank Zappa) and the man's sense of humour, with little of the aggro and swagger that has regularly put me off other rappers Ovi has pointed me at. It's terrible to question these things, I know, but this business of his death being reported two months later--and not confirmed by any outside source (to my knowledge)... Time will tell. From Madvillainy, this is "Money Folder", the first of its two singles: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Madvillainy

I have to admit, I had the same thoughts. This is a man known as a prankster of sorts, allegedly to the point of sending out other people in his masks to lip sync at "his" shows sometimes. The two dates in question were Halloween and New Year's. No cause given. And the reports are (I believe) exclusively from his family and his label. It all struck me as either very fitting in one sense, or very fitting in another.
My assumption is that it's all true. And that is sad. Like you, jk, I am turned off by the braggadocious, alpha-male presentation of many rappers. I enjoy seeing humor, self-deprecation, nuanced lyrics, etc., and so while I wasn't a big MF Doom fan, I definitely appreciated his approach.

R.I.P. Gerry Marsden (September 24, 1942 - January 3, 2021) who passed away from a heart infection. "Gerry & The Pacemakers, Billy J. too, they're all gonna be here to sing for you...here they come from all over the world"

A great shame. And ironic, considering the name of his band. Although it wasn't (and isn't) my type of music, I was impressed by their pianist, Les Maguire, and by the fact that they were clearly enjoying themselves, their front man most of all. They were the first British beat band (indeed, the first act!) to score three UK #1's in a row. Rest in peace, Gerry.

Yes, just read news at youtube, by Rhino, that Gerry Marsden died. Such good singer with great voice. Song posted by Sheriff John Stone is big favorite since discovering British 60s bands in 2010-11. Besides, he & Pacemakers did THE best rendition of this song, Gerry kills with vocals:

Besides, he & Pacemakers did THE best rendition of this song, Gerry kills with vocals: I can't recall hearing this '60s song (no one's perfect!) but this sounds great. I see it began life as a B-side for Arthur Alexander (he of "You Better Move On" and "Anna" fame). Like the Stones' and Beatles' versions of those two songs, this is pretty cool. I see The Beatles covered this one too. Just gave AA's version a spin and Gerry's can vie with it quite easily. Thanks for the heads up, zz.

True, Gerry sings it best. AA's voice is boring. Btw, RS's YBMO proves Mick can sing slow joints equally good as fast songs.

Keyboardist Michael Fonfara, who had a key role writing, arranging, and producing music for Lou Reed's bands in the latter half of the '70s, died after a two-year bout with cancer. He was 74. Fonfara also appeared on recordings by Foreigner ("Urgent") and the Everly Brothers, among many others through his long career.

Well that's no good of me! I've now fixed the link, but rather than go to the new story (since you've covered that), I've linked to a 1980 Lou Reed concert in Italy, with Fonfara a big part of the band.

The Dolls are just one more band founded in the '70s that passed me by. Great shame. Cancer is a b*tch.

The Dolls are just one more band founded in the '70s that passed me by. Great shame. Cancer is a b*tch. The New York Dolls were one of the early punk rock and glitter bands. The original band only released two albums - The New York Dolls (1973) and Too Much Too Soon (1974) - though there's several comps, live albums, and "official bootlegs" out there. They shined brightly and burned out quickly. Sadly, lead singer David Johansen is the last surviving Doll:
Billy Murcia (drums) died in 1972 Johnny Thunders (guitar) died in 1991 Jerry Nolan (drums) died in 1992 Arthur "Killer" Kane (bass) died in 2004 Sylvain Sylvain (guitar) died in 2021
