Legendary talk show host Jay Leno turns 72 today.
I have to admit, I was never a fan. I was on Team Letterman in terms of the late-night shows back in the days I watched them, basically through the 90s.
It's only in recent years that I realized what a massive reputation Leno had as a standup, though, back in the late 70s and into the 80s. Honestly, being the age I was, I only ever knew him as a talk show host. I've since watched some of his old material, and it's pretty funny. I definitely prefer it to his hosting!
That said, I do prefer Leno's style hosting to most of the current crop of late-night hosts.

I was very much a Letterman guy, but I shifted more towards Leno in the late 90s / early 00s. I felt like Dave's schtick was wearing a little thin. Although, I thought it was pretty crummy how he retired, just to immediately unretire and force his way back onto The Tonight Show.

Honestly that's right around the time I just stopped watching either guy or anyone else. And it must have been right around then or shortly thereafter when it seemed that instead of two options, there were a billion. (Well, somewhere between two and a billion, maybe...)

Yeah, that's probably about when I jumped off. Sometimes, I'd put Leno on in the background if I was up late doing something on the internet. I lost interest completely when Fallon took over. For the life of me, I cannot figure out how that guy has a career.

"The future is now! Soon every American home will integrate their television, phone and computer. You'll be able to visit the Louvre on one channel, or watch female wrestling on another. You can do your shopping at home, or play Mortal Kombat with a friend from Vietnam. There's no end to the possibilities!"

A sequel to This Is Spinal Tap (1984) is apparently in the works with a target release date of 2024. The original principals are to be in it: Harry Shearer, Michael McKean, and Christopher Guest, as well as Rob Reiner (who also directs). With 40-year breaks between movies, I'm guessing they won't be doing a Part III.

It might've been a made for TV special to promote the Break Like the Wind album.

I just found it, it's a made for TV special more so than a movie. I remember in the early DVD days, Best Buy sold it as "The Return of Spinal Tap." www.imdb.com/title/tt0123278/?ref_=nm_flmg_act_188I've never seen this. I've heard it's amusing in parts, but not a patch on the original. Although, I'll say that a new Tap movie has potential with the focus of an aging legacy act. Just as the original showed the band transition from a beat band to psychedelia to heavy metal, I really hope the new one shows Spinal Tap trying to adapt to the colorful late 80s and the grungy mid 90s.

We're just a few days from the theatrical release of the long-gestating sequel to one of the really iconic movies of my childhood: Top Gun: Maverick is coming Friday.
I'm not sure how much I care. But I have to admit it's really amazing that, 35+ years later, Tom Cruise can pop up in this sequel seeming not all that much older than he was in 1986. And my understanding of how they managed the Val Kilmer appearance--he had a struggle with throat cancer and tracheal surgeries, but his dialogue apparently has been created digitally using previously recorded speech as a model--is quite remarkable. They also took months training the actors in real F-14s. Imagine the budget of this movie...
Will such a massive project be a hit at the box office? I wonder if it will connect in a similar way the original did.

I had really zero interest in seeing it until a friend mentioned maybe wanting to check it out. I've never seen the original either. I just remember in grade school it would come up in bad movie in conversations.

I have to make a confession. As a lover of 1980s movies, I have never seen, nor have I really ever had any interest in seeing, Top Gun.
I'm not sure why. I know I was quite young when it came out, but nothing ever really enticed me to check it out.
But, if Ghostbusters: Afterlife is anything to go by, I'm sure a new Top Gun will do pretty well.

That's so funny and interesting that neither of you has seen it. I would've been a few months shy of 10 when it came out, and it was one of those movies that everyone saw. I'll bet I saw it 6-8 times, first in the theater (which was awe-inspiring at the time) and then renting it repeatedly on VHS. It was like I expect Star Wars might have been a decade prior.
And in the Reagan '80s, the Cold War still going on, that kind of movie was big, too. You had not just Top Gun, but things like Red Dawn, Iron Eagle, etc. Russia, fighter jets specifically, the military in general, these were big topics at the time. I was like everyone else my age: in 1986-87, if you asked what I wanted to be when I grew up, I'd say fighter pilot.

I remember Top Gun being pretty popular among some of my classmates in school. But, I really never got fully into action movies (I will kindly surrender my man card if necessary). I didn't even see Lethal Weapon until I was in my mid to late 20s.

Well on that--action movies--I'm actually right there with you. What's more, I can one-up you by noting I'm not into horror movies, either. Sure, when I was 10-12, I was watching those movies like I mentioned before. But before long, I was pretty much into comedies and sometimes dramas. Action and gore rarely appealed to me, and still don't.
Even as a teenager when I read all of Stephen King's books (to switch medium for a moment), it was usually the less pure-horror ones that appealed to me: The Stand, for example, or the short story that became Stand By Me.
So I guess I'll leave my man-card by the door as I leave...
