It seems that, even in the afterglow of Ghostbusters - Afterlife, the infamous 2016 remake refuses to go away. A massive 4K boxset of the three Ghostbusters movies with tons of bonus features was announced for a February release. Apparently, Paul Feig was critical of the box set for excluding his 2016 movie (never mind that it's not a part of the original franchise, and has since been dismissed by Dan Aykroyd, not some internet fanboy, Dan Aykroyd). So, Sony caved and included a digital copy. screenrant.com/ghostbusters-reboot-2016-box-set-digital-copy-backlash/

I'm a little surprised that this story hasn't made more waves, maybe it's because the news came out in late January, not late December. But, there will be a direct sequel to A Christmas Story coming soon, with Peter Billingsley reprising his role as a now adult Ralphie Parker. www.nbcchicago.com/news/local/a-christmas-story-sequel-coming-to-the-big-screen-starring-adult-ralphie-reports/2733399/This might sound odd from somebody who was super excited for Ghostbusters: Afterlife, and watches Cobra Kai, but something about this just rings hallow to me. Probably moreso than any other 1980s entity that's been remade or rebooted over the years. A Christmas Story has a certain timelessness to it (setting the movie in 1940 and not in current times no doubt contributes). While it wasn't embraced initially upon release, it grew from a cult favorite to a pop culture icon. There have actually already been two sequels made. In 1994, My Summer Story, also based on the works of Jean Sheppard (again featuring his narration) was released. It's actually pretty good, but it flew way under the radar, and has mostly been forgotten. In 2012, a direct to DVD movie - A Christmas Story 2 - was released to little fanfare. And, now here comes a third attempt. I'm sure once the first trailer comes out, and they show the old house on Cleveland St, maybe something will trigger in me, but for right now, I'm saying Bah Humbug.

I'm very skeptical of that. As much as part of me wants more of what I know I like, I think I'm more apt to be suspicious of attempts to recreate magic. It's hard to do, but I think that often the best thing is leaving well enough alone. (Not something Hollywood is known for. "We have a hit? LET'S MAKE A FRANCHISE!")

And I can kinda see reviving an old entity that was already a franchise - ie. Star Wars, Ghostbusters, Halloween, Karate Kid / Cobra Kai, etc etc. But, A Christmas Story was never meant to be a franchise or have a multiverse or whatever.

In 1982, when the “Girls of the Big 8” issue of Playboy came out, my sorority voted me as “Most Likely to Pose for Playboy” during the yearly joke nominations, I assume I was given the award because of my figure, looks and the fact that I didn’t feel the need to hide my assets back then (Yet Senior year I was dating the IFC president - so it was like FU Beeatches). There were a couple of girls in other houses who did pose and they were ostracized immediately after publication. I always considered Playboy classy though, compared to Penthouse or Hustler. So Now I am watching “The Secrets of Playboy” on A&E. It started out well - praising Hugh Hefner for his racial inclusiveness and the fact that much of his staff was female, but about half an hour in, this bitch Jennifer Saginor comes on and I am pretty much done. It just keeps going downhill. Don't watch. It’s poking a dead man who can’t defend himself.
Of course I had to watch the next episode and Holly Madison is making me so mad. (And I loved “The Girls Next Door”)She even says she wasn’t physically attracted to Heff and claims she is on the autistic spectrum. What the heck. These women all knew what they were getting into. They are famous because of him. I hate it when women play the victim. Really? Not a politically correct viewpoint, but damn, I’m a chick and I hate it when other chicks just play victim. You know what you were getting into. Why are you so upset now? It’s like the girls loved the challenge and competition, and then when they were replaced, they were shocked and upset. Yet it was never really about Heff. It was about the competition.

I want to walk a fine line here, but I do appreciate what you're saying.
I'll try to say it this way: there are absolutely victims who deserve nothing less than our compassion. Nobody deserves to have something terrible done to them, regardless of their sex, politics, job, lifestyle, or whatever other thing we can name. Cruelty and evil are cruel and evil. (How's that for Kapitan Obvious?)
But I start with that because there is a certain type of person--male or female, it doesn't matter, and we all know some of them--who are just drama queens, and who LOVE to be the center of attention, including as a victim. It's not that people aren't victims, it's that often people who aren't victims want to present themselves as victims, or to use claims of victimization to excuse their own bad choices.
There is a funny standup show in which Norm Macdonald (Can Kapitan go a week without a Norm reference? Signs point to "No.") is riffing on "teachers are the REAL heroes," and a HS teacher in the audience insists that yes, she IS a REAL HERO. And he starts pushing, trying to differentiate between "yes, teaching is important" and "you're a HERO." But she insists she's a hero. He makes some joke that real heroes tend not to go around saying they're heroes: instead it's often "nah, anyone would have done the same thing."
I'd say something similar is true of victims. Too often, actual victims blame themselves for what happened to them, and that's terrible for them. Or they don't blame anyone, and just try to buck up and get on with life, which is admirable but can be very harmful to them. They often do deserve and need some help, whatever form it might take. But then there is a type of person screaming "I'M A VICTIM!"
Real victims don't go around calling themselves victims at every opportunity, just like real heroes don't go around calling themselves heroes all the time.

I contrast this with “Athlete A”, which I just watched on Netflix. It is a documentary about the sexual abuse scandal in USA gymnastics. Just heartbreaking what those girls went through. In the case of one of the athletes, it appears that she might actually have been denied an Olympic team alternate spot because of a complaint she made against Nassar. Those women ARE truly victims.

The latest Batman reboot is due out in just under a month.
As a big Batfan, I feel think WB has gone to this well one time too many.
I've also grown tired of each new version trying to outdo the dark tone of the previous one.
Any enthusiasm I had for the movie was curbed by the announcement of a two hour 55 minute run time.

I know there's a non-music RIP thread, but I could imagine discussion veering into the man's work, so: Ivan Reitman, legendary director and producer with credits including "Animal House," "Meatballs," "Stripes," "Ghostbusters," "Twins," "Kindergarten Cop" and many others, has died. He was 75. His family says he died peacefully in his sleep.

I was sad to hear this. But, it's a nice knowing that his final film was a collaboration with his son Jason - Ghostbusters Afterlife.

I was just looking through Reitman's filmography on wikipedia and saw this:
I had no idea! That sounds amazing... (Obviously easy to say when you haven't seen a script. For all I know, it would've sucked. But Bill Murray as Batman and David Bowie as the Joker? Wow.)

I'd never heard about this possible Batman entry, but I know Bill Murray was apparently under consideration for Tim Burton's version in the late 80s before the role went to Keaton.

Nice interview with Francis Ford Coppola (and James Caan, Talia Shire, and Robert Duvall) on the making of The Godfather:
